“The common perception is that acupuncture is ‘voodoo’ or ancient medicine and that it can not compare to modern medical science,” says Esther Hornstein, an acupuncturist in Flatbush which offers Traditional Chinese Medicine for a wide range of issues.
“In reality, acupuncture is one of the most effective evidence based alternative methods in the United States,” she says, pointing out her Master’s in acupuncture, Licensed by the State of New York and board certified by the NCCAOM.
“Acupuncturists are not witch doctors and there is no religious dogma that comes with it. There are many scientific studies showing how acupuncture is comparable or even better than certain medications, and of course, there are very few risks and side effects.”
Hoping to demystify the public’s notion, Hornstein will be participating as a vendor at the first annual Crown Heights Health and Wellness Fair to take place this Sunday, May 26, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm at the United Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown Street.
“I hope the attendees come away with a sense that there are safe alternatives to medication and that just because their doctor can’t help them doesn’t mean that the must suffer. Alternative medicine can work well with conventional medicine to serve the patient better,” Hornstein said.
The expo will feature a series of lectures, demonstrations and a full fair displaying a variety of health and wellness vendors to help locals make well-informed choices about their families’ health. There will even be refreshments and giveaways. And admission is free.
At her booth, orthotist Rochelle Silberman will be presenting the orthopedic appliances and braces she designs and fits for adults and children. Healthcare lawyer Jack Weissman will be advising and guiding families through the maze of elder law and long-term care and health care needs of seniors.
Linda Spiegel from the Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica Hills of Queens, will present her 200 bed frum residential facility, with its beautifully renovated environment, mostly all private rooms and its kosher kitchens under the Vaad Harabonim of Queens.
“Our facility is only 20 minutes from Crown Heights on the Jackie Robinson and we look forward to serving your community and meeting all your needs,” she says.
Another service to be present is from the Tri-Boro Auto School, an established driving school that has served the five boroughs for the past 30 years and is opening a a specialized driver rehabilitation program geared for the disabled and handicapped population.
“Knowledge and awareness of our specialized program is what the population needs as well as all the other vendors attending the Crown Heights Expo,” says the owner Raanan Zidile. “We are here to meet, greet and educate the population as well as each other.”
The event will feature over 40 vendors from across the healthcare industry, including psychologists, vitamin manufacturers, personal trainers, homeopaths, homecare agencies and many more, says the organizer Chaim Backman, a physical therapist and triathlon coach.
The fair, which will cover the entire lifecycle, from infancy to senior care, will also include a lineup of presentations on a range of topics like healthcare law, patient advocacy, Halachic organ donations, and fitness.

to find some wonderful RCTs or you can type “acupuncture” in the pubmed.com website. The NIH and Chochrane Directory research acupuncture very vigorously.
I am a rehabilitation therapist. Are there any studies supporting acupuncture? I do not believe that it works in the way that many people in crown heights say it does. Yes, it does relieve pain due to pressure points but that’s all it does. It does not actually cure allergies, etc. Please support your evidence before you tell patients to stop seeing primary care doctors. As for the practice of many parents in crown heights not vaccinating their children – with all do respect, that’s just plain stupid. By my second semester of graduate school a while ago, i and… Read more »
Are there separate times for men/women shopping in the neighborhood stores? eateries? doctor’s offices?
you might want to check out this expo for any mental health vendors.
It was reported that there were 4 cases of measles in the Brooklyn haredi community confirmed as of April 25. 34 cases have now been confirmed as of today.
Sure you don’t want to inoculate your kids? Child protective services might come after you
Will there be separate hours for men and women?
Can you please post presentation topics and times given, thanks!
when there is finally an evening for physical health you ask about spiritual?
for that you should go to your local shuir
well said – totally agree!
keep up the great work!
I hope there’s emphasis on dispelling the pernicious myths in this community about vaccinating our children. The belief that inoculating ourselves is anything else besides a halachic and ethical imperative must end.
Physical health, and emotional health vendors are on the list, which are very important. What about spiritual health?

Don’t Neglect the body that H-Shem gave you, Don’t neglect the parents that raised you, Don’t neglect the children that depend on you to stay healthy and live a long life, Don’t neglect that Doctors were put on this earth by G-d and their purpsose is to heal. Don’t neglect the fact that noone is disputing that the Torah holds all the answers.
Instead be thankful and grateful that you live in a community that cares about its fellow man and provides you with all the resources to live a healthy life.
Hope to attend!!
sooooooo true i hope everyone know it . even thou this event is very imporent to the community a big yashar koach
Don’t neglect the Torah Booth. “Whoever has a headache (I take that to mean the Galut) should study Torah. ” All true healing is from the Torah, ultimately. What will healers (who have spent many years studying) do when there is no more illness? They won’t even need to prevent anything anymore. Will all their studies go to waste? Of course not. Think about it and let me know. One thing they can do is to hear the G-dly energy at the root of the Jewish soul. Remember Who the true Healer is. For healing to work, we must be… Read more »
