The Ess and Bentch kosher eatery on Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights has reopened once again to bustling crowds.
The popular restaurant had its doors shut for about 2 weeks after a visit by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The restaurant, known for serving fast Mediterranean food just a block away from 770 Eastern Parkway, received 30 violation points during an inspection by the department.
“Establishment was previously cited for not providing a toilet facility for employees,” an inspector wrote. “Food service establishment was closed by Order of the Department of Health.”
Another reason for the closure was the leakage of water from a handwashing sink in the kitchen.
Owner Nadav Hadad told COLlive.com that both utility issues have been corrected, and the restaurant has now been reopened.
Customers have been delighted to see them reopened, and the restaurant has been as busy as ever, the owner said.
To celebrate their reopening, they will be offering specials beginning on Sunday, such as a pita falafel for $2.99 and a laffa shawarma, drink and fries for $14.99.
Please note, the specials will begin on Sunday.
It all looks delicious and amazing! What’s not so amazing is the mingling in a small space between the boys and girls. When my kids were growing up, in the “good old days” when E&B was fondly known by another name, you wouldn’t see any female in there. If women or girls wanted something from that place, a male relative would buy it.
Surely there’s away to make the owners & customers happy, without both genders being on top of each other? It’s not Chabad’s way… or it shouldn’t be.
Maybe with the shidduch crisis, a little mingling isn’t such a bad idea.
That is a horrible suggestion to fix the shidduch Crisis, how about having boys and girls in the same class 1-8 to solve the shiduch crisis? They will become friends and might marry? No that’s not the way to fix it.
Ps. Everything nowadays is a crisis.
Took the words right out of my mouth. How else do people expect to solve the crisis??
No Community should ever make woman a lower class. Perhaps Meah Sharim might be more suitable for your needs.
…the Beis Hamikdash isn’t your kind of place either. They had separate courtyards for men and for women, after all.
some people have some serious rethinking to do, are you joking? With everything going on in the world, your worried about buying a falafel and seeing the “other gender” G-D Forbid.
Both Genders being too close to each other? That must be where your mind is at because you can turn anything into an issue if you wanted to. Maybe we should make the Super markets a male only zone?
Thank you for your thoughts though.
some people have some serious rethinking to do. And that would be those to whom concerns about halachah are no longer important because of “everything going on in the world,” when in fact it’s precisely the opposite – “everything going on in the world” is meant as a wake-up call from Hashem to improve our behavior.
I have an idea, how about we have separate sides of the street for men and woman. And hopefully then these people will finally learn the true meaning of Torah.
How about you take serious things seriously, and leave the leitzonus out of it? The OP’s point was specifically about a small crowded storefront, not a street, and a moment’s thought would make the difference clear.
So explain to me what do you expect the solution to be not letting certain people in the store at certain times. You sound delusional if you feel uncomfortable about the situation don’t go there.
What’s the problem with boys and girls buying food/eating in the same restaurant???… This seems to be a personal preference thing so I might have an idea ✨go somewhere else?✨
and contrast it with other restaurants. That might provide a clue.
Why don’t we start chocolate, sweet expressions the dreidel and etc. I believe the only way to go about this is the same way we did with pools either you have 2 separate pools( stores in our case) or separate times. I think a fair compromise would be bochurim would give up sweet expressions and nori bar in exchange for Essen n bench and mermelsteins, and chocolate would be from females during between the hours 6 am and 9pm and the rest for the gentleman. I have spoken to some rabonim, mashpaim and michanchim, most were in support, And we’re… Read more »
Please explain to me how you will enforce it. I can’t wait for when people come to visit Crown Heights who aren’t religious and are told they can’t go to stores because it’s not their time.
If a man or boys wanted something from that place a female relative would buy it?
The best place and only affordable option to feed your family !! Keep these prices
Are the sale dates in army time?
For you we ran a few algorithms to assist with this Q.
These are the results we came up with re; sale dates-
6/12-18/22
Seems that based on our studies there is is a typoo as “year” is printed /12 when it should be in fact /22
June 12 until June 18 is one full calandar week Sunday thru the end of the weak.
Best wishes.
for “Expert Statictician” we ran a spell check:
Statictician = Statistician
typoo = typo (nice word to choose for a typo)
calandar = calendar
weak = week
