Even with being one of the most densely populated areas in the world, the large city of Hong Kong is not accustomed to the sight of Sukkah huts – not to mention an eco-friendly one.
On Wednesday, the first day of Chol Hamoed Sukkos, Jewish children ages 5 to 10 went scouting around town in a “Sukkah Hopping” activity.
They met at the Chabad Hong Kong and enjoyed a meal, fun, games and songs in different locations in the city which is an important business and tourism hub in East Asia.
A highlight was a Sukkah engineered and built by Ezra Shemesh, a member of the local Chabad community, with the help of over 50 children.
In addition to decorating the main Chabad Sukkah which was built out of bamboos with Chinese bamboo scafolding, the children helped construct an environmentally conscious Sukkah with empty plastic drinking bottles.
The idea was to take a current theme (i.e. environmentalism) and engage children in a Jewish way, explained Shliach Goldie Avtzon.
Bottles were collected in two different collection points in Hong Kong since
July and was on full display for the hundreds of people who came to spend Sukkos with Chabad.
The main Sukkah has been playing host to complimentary meals throughout Yomtov. On Thursday night there will be a Shwarma in the Sukkah event with meat, falafel, hummus, soft drinks and L’chaim – hosted by Rabbi Mordechai Avtzon, Head Shliach of Asia.
“As there are not many Sukkahs in Hong Kong this is truly a community
Sukkah and the community has been very involved in cooking the meals and sponsorship,” Mrs. Avtzon said.
That must of took a long time to make that
