The smell of delicious kosher food is not a very common one in the Cuban capital city of Havana and the inauguration of a new Sefer Torah just magnified the excitement.
So when Chabad Friends of Cuban Jewry (CFCJ) notified the community of the upcoming event, the Jews of Cuba waited anxiously for this magnificent and auspicious moment.
Sure enough on the night of the event, the hall was filled to capacity, with many tables laden with scrumptious food, and extra delicacies and delicious desserts, all contributing to the evening’s excitement.
The event began with Rabbi Naftali Spielman, a Lubavitch bochur representing CFCJ, addressing the community on the importance of every letter of the Torah.
“If just one single letter is missing it renders the Torah not kosher,” he proclaimed. “So too, the Jewish people are compared to the letters of the Torah. Each Jew counts to complete the Jewish nation.”
He added that this idea is the emphasis of the projects of the CFCJ, to look after every single Jew in a personal way – through home visits, providing food, clothing and medications, or communal activities and gatherings.
The highlight of the night was seeing Cuban Jews dancing in the streets of Havana, with tears of joy and laughter. The traditional recitations which are recited at the conclusion of a Torah were proudly chanted by all, as Rabbi Daniel Illulian led the prayers with much enthusiasm and excitement.
At one point the joy poured out onto the streets of Nuevo Vedado as the Jews danced and hugged the Torah, showing the inseparable connection between the Jews and the Torah.
It was no less exciting when at the conclusion of the event, the CFCJ provided each individual with a full bag loaded with kosher food sent especially from abroad, in order to carry forth the inspiration of the evening spiritually and physically.
“Our representatives spent much time visiting many homes, providing them with humanitarian aid such as food, clothing, medication and words of inspiration,” said Rabbi Shimon Aisenbach, director of CFCJ.
