The monster winter storm that has impacted nearly half of the United States has descended on the tri-state area, threatening near-blizzard conditions and power outages as it prepares to dump up to a foot of snow in the New York City area and up to 18 inches in parts of the Hudson Valley.
Mayor Mamdani had said there would be no traditional snow day. With the winter storm upon us, the city announced Sunday that NYC public school buildings will be closed tomorrow. Classes, however, will still be in session remotely.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul delivered a briefing on Sunday morning, warning of the freezing temperatures and high snow totals expected to grip the state.
“An artic siege has taken over our New York is being hit with the “coldest winter storm we’ve seen in years,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said today, calling conditions across the state “brutal,” “bone-chilling” and “dangerous.”
In a briefing held at one of the state’s emergency operations centers, Hochul said local officials are bracing for the longest cold stretch and the highest snow totals the state has seen in several years.
“Already, records in the state have been shattered,” she said, adding that several places upstate have already recorded “shocking” temperatures, including minus 34 degrees in the city of Watertown and minus 49 degrees in the village of Copenhagen.
Hochul said much of upstate New York is expected to see snowfall totals of 8 to 12 inches, with 12 to 18 inches of snow forecast across the state’s southern tier, Mohawk Valley, Central New York and parts of the Finger Lakes. New York City and Long Island could also be blanketed in up to 8 to 12 inches of snow.
