Medical update
We would like to thank all the people who filled out the survey (if you haven’t please do so here). We are beginning to analyze the information to understand the current situation in our community. Looking at the data, it would appear that there were significantly fewer new infections in the past few days when compared with last week. In a large part this may be due to the rapid accelerant that Purim provided in spreading the infection throughout our community.
There will likely continue to be sporadic cases through our community among those who have not been exposed, including the elderly and those with chronic illness, and we must repeat our strong admonition for those who are elderly (>65 years old) or with chronic illness, who have not had the virus yet, to remain socially isolated.
We are still seeing many patients who have been ill for over a week who are not doing well. Once again, please attend to eating, drinking, and walking around the home regularly. Another plea is made for adults who HAVE HAD the illness, to go and take care of your parents if they are currently ill. For those on medication to lower your blood sugar, if you have been sick for days and not eating, please discuss your blood sugar medications with your physician. We must repeat the instruction for all those with shortness of breath that they must call Hatzalah.
Concerning Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine) – this morning, the governor of New York banned the sale of Plaquenil. The exact reasons relate to the shortage created and the unproven nature of the therapy. Notwithstanding the above, we are encouraging those already on the drug to finish their prescription. If you have a cardiac history, please clear it with your cardiologist. At this time, we are not suggesting widespread Zithromax use (in the absence of Plaquenil) at the onset of the illness.
Please continue to observe social distancing, and get some fresh air with your children if you are no longer ill.

May all those that are ill have a speedy recovery, and all those that are well stay well.

Any estimate of numbers of cases?! It would be so helpful to know how many people had symptoms but weren’t able to test vs the number of positive tests currently being reported.
You say to visit our elderly parents once we’ve recovered from the virus. What does recover mean? At what point are we no longer a danger to the elderly?
The article is only talkibg about those elderly who are currently sick with the virus so having another sick person visit them wont put them more at risk. if they arent sick, they obviously should not be visited by someone who is sick. The official guidance is if youre sick, stay home until 72 hours after you feel completely better or one week after you first felt sick.
I dont think the letter is telling sick (but recovering) people to go outside and possibly infect other people on your way to your parents house. I think it means people who have been fully recovered for 72 hours to a week like you said in your last sentence.
it’s 72 hours of feeling fine AND a week since you’ve been sick, not just one or the other according to the CDC.
No!
If you are sick, DO NOT visit elderly who are “anyhow” sick.
The article emphasized “ALREADY HAD” in past tense.
You can aid elderly who are sick only if you are already PAST the virus (7 days from the onset of symptoms or 3 days from the ending of all symptoms, whichever is greater) in which the possibility of you getting sick or making the elderly more sick with another strain of the virus is almost 0.
Thank you Dr Rosen. Your tireless efforts are amazing.
First day I hear somewhat good news.
“No additional “new” Covid-19 cases in Crown Heights. This has been getting to me lately. Chasdei Hashem we are getting better, going in the right direction. But still need to extra cautious on this.
Just not as many as last week. Its still very dangerous out there in our community. This is not the time to relax. Read the letter more carefully.
If no one in our family has had any symptoms yet and we have been isolating for 12 days now, can we assume we have it and just didn’t have symptoms or have not yet had it all ?
If no one in your family had any symptoms then you likely did not have it and you should not take risks that could cause you to get it.
Am I still contagious if all my previous symptoms (headache, dizzy, weak) went away, and I’m just left without a taste or smell?
I’m told this can last for up to 10 days
These are all great question. I would suggest to call the hotline number in this article for the answers
