Following the strong participation and feedback at the recent Crown Heights Town Hall, the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC) is calling on qualified community members to step forward to serve on local Community Boards representing Greater Crown Heights.
Community Boards play a critical role in shaping neighborhood life. They advise on housing, land use, public safety, sanitation, transportation, and other quality-of-life issues that directly affect residents. Ensuring informed, engaged representation helps strengthen communication between residents and city agencies and contributes to more responsive local decision-making.
“Community Boards are where many neighborhood issues are first discussed and addressed,” said Shmuly Rosenstein, Acting Chairman of CHJCC. “Serving on a Community Board is an opportunity to contribute constructively and help represent the needs of the community.”
As the community’s elected council, CHJCC serves as the elected representative body for residents within the Atlantic–Church and Rochester–Bedford corridor. In that capacity, CHJCC plays a central coordinating role on community matters and encourages prospective Community Board candidates to work collaboratively with the organization to support coordination, open communication, and an understanding of community priorities.
This effort is non-partisan and community-focused, aimed at encouraging civic participation and strengthening local leadership. Community members who are interested in serving or learning more about Community Board opportunities are invited to reach out.

I strongly recommend that Meir New join the Community Board. I know he is extremely busy, but that is precisely why he would be such an asset—busy means he is actively engaged, getting things done. He is brilliant, articulate, and highly presentable, and his leadership would be invaluable to the Board. If there is any way to convince him to serve, I believe we should work together to make it happen.
I also believe Meir Bakshin would be an excellent addition. The two Meirs together would bring strong, thoughtful leadership and make a real impact.
I’d love to join. CH needs a lot of help …
Lets focus on what it means to be part of the Community Board. By the way there are two that are in our area depending where you live. There is CB9 which is for the main part of our neighborhood in Crown Heights South and across Eastern Parkway, in Crown Heights North is CB8. To join as a board member, you have to commit to going once a month to the meetings between September to June. The meetings can be from 2 to 3 hours easy and voting is done at the end.
