A Town Hall meeting will be held in Crown Heights Sunday to discuss abuse prevention in the frum community.
The event will center on awareness regarding school policies towards abuse and victims, and will encourage and educate parents in what they can expect and demand from their child’s school and camp.
“Shame, secrecy, and fear around discussing abuse is a harsh reality in every community, both frum and secular,” organizers told COLlive. “But we must confront it.”
Charles Hynes, District Attorney of Kings County who has been in hot water recently over his office’s handling of such crimes in the community, is scheduled to address the topic.
He will be joined by legal experts – Civil Rights Attorney Norman Siegel, Clergy Abuse Attorney Irwin Zalkin, Rabbi Yosef Blau, Senior Spiritual Guidance Counselor of Yeshiva University and Rabbi Zvi Gluck, Director of crisis management at “Our Place” center in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Speakers will discuss what policies can be implemented to combat abuse in our community specifically, and to give proper direction on what to do if G-d forbid abuse occurs.
“We will be giving practical solutions to protect potential and actual victims,” the organizers said.
The event will take place Sunday, June 10, 2012 at 4:00pm at the hall at 580 Crown St. between Albany Ave. and Troy Ave. in Brooklyn, NY.
The event is open to the public, men and women are invited to attend.
Victim advocate Eliyahu Federman is the event spokesperson and can be reached at [email protected]
As one example, he actually wrote up on Bronya Shaffer’s previous event https://collive.com/show_news.rtx?id=13472&hl=Eliyahu+Federman and https://collive.com/show_news.rtx?id=13275&hl=Eliyahu+Federman He also wrote a Kidush Hashem open in the Jpost praising the CH Beis Din on top of helping numerous victims.
Ooooo u have a bad case of rabbis covering up! And protecting the wrong people!
I agree with you that Federman only is only involved to promote himself but I think the event itself is important and everybody should go despite him being involved
Whoever managed to arrange this kol hakovod!!!! Our community is finally coming out of the dark in this inyan and this will help lots of kids to be safe. But who is Eli Federman to be the spokesman??? He is known to the whole community as an upstart just graduted law school and holds himself to be a ‘spokesman’ for the community?? And since when does he know anything about this inyan? Where was he when the first programs began? Who did he ever personally help beside himself. The only spokesperson I know in this community is Bronya Schaffer who… Read more »
Great and important comment!!! I wish we could participate from Los Angeles!
If this meeting happened six months ago, nothing would come out of it. Since Hynes and the DA office is getting so much flack that if he doesn’t lock pedophiles and anybody who tries any type intimidation he is NOT going to get elected again and he knows it.
If you’re a pedophile, you might want to go to a country that you can’t get extradited from. (not Israel)
Great comment!
Act like TRUe chassidim and look for the GOOD!
The event is to Protect Your Children!
You should speak about how the Rabbis won’t get away with COVERUPS anymore!
Whatt!! You have Zalkin Law Firm on board?? Irwin Zalkin is known world wide for suing the Catholic Church billions of dollars and closing them down!! I think the Yeshivas and camps better get into shape with policies and protect our children before the same things happen to them. (I hope he not here tell us that one of our yeshivas is getting sued for harboring a molester!
NOW THE TIME HAS COME FOR A CHANGE
Interesting to see that both of these attorneys are both Jewish!
Observation,
If you are having a Civil Rights Attorney, a Clergy Abuse Attorney, one of the top Guidance Counselors, a Director of a kids at risk center plus the DA = pedophiles better run for the hills
Norman Siegel and Irwin Zalkin, I am impressed – wow
there should be a donate box
who ever the person is that arranged this event- THANK YOU!
somebody has connections….. the day has come when all sickos will be destroyed!
Then you should attend and find out how to protect your precious child!
It should be mandatory that all teachers of Lubavitcher yeshivas attend!!!!!!!
Why are you loosing focus here? This is a topic about preventing child abuse and how to deal with the problem that should be the questions here. What do people want to see come out of this event? What questions people have? Why aren’t we protecting our children? Why do we listen to rabbi who continuously cover up abuse of our children? How can we make it more easy for victims to come forward? Why isent the community supporting the victims instead of the predator? So many WHY’S to be asked and now it looks like this is the time… Read more »
What an enormous Kidush Hashem and Kidush Lubavitch. Showing that the community is confronting this issue. Poshut saving lives. Kudos to the organizers!
To 4,6 and 10, whether one agrees or not civil right issues is what he has taken on. nothing wrong with that.
Mr. Federman is a big mouth, lets go to this meeting and see how we can rid him from opening his mouth.
We can do this by
1. Learning to take accountability
2. Stop shoving things under the rug
3. taking skills and know hows from the other speakers to bring home with us.
Maybe then we can give nothing for Mr. Federman to talk about.
Till then, I stand behind the fact that he is the only one that is ready to open his mouth.
The know your rights event was very positive. It really united the black and Jewish community. This abuse stuff is an important subject and glad it is being addressed …
It’s a very positive and important step. I hope everyone will attend. Rabbi Blau is an expert who does incredible work. I’m sure Jewish Community Watch had a hand in arranging this event. it’s time to confront the issues and rid the community of ignorance and denial. May the victims of these hateful crimes heal and see their perpetrators brought to justice.
Moshiach now!
FYI there is a Facebook event page up https://www.facebook.com/events/391428124226196/
Will Mr. Federman the “Law School graduate” be using this to bash our community again?
to demand that he drop the charges against Yitsi Shuchat given his failing to go after after the dozens criminals who have attacked members of our comunety in far more brutal cases then those that shuchat stands accused of
I will not attend anything that Eli Federman is involved with. he has time and again thrown our community under the bus for cheap self promotion.
Lets hear it from him first hand not through the media
Lets not all forget about what Hynes is doing to yitzchak shuchat!
We all must attend to this event and demand answers why shuchat is being his pawn for elections
this makes it like there is no problem and all and its a friendly get together. the reason this man is under fire because he is not doing his job representing victims from disgusting crimes
