The morning of Tuesday, December 4, Rabbi Shneur Oirechman, Director of Chabad of Tallahassee and longtime informal rabbi to Florida’s Jewish and non-Jewish political leadership at the State Capitol, was honored with addressing outgoing Gov. Rick Scott and his Cabinet for the second time.
Rabbi Oirechman, who has enjoyed a friendly relationship with the Governor and his cabinet for several years now, opened with appreciation for American religious freedom in general, and the opportunity to address and bless the Governor and cabinet in particular. He mentioned of the original eight-day Chanukah miracle, and how that miracle of the menorah’s extended burn actually began on the second, not first, day of the holiday.
The rabbi continued with the theme of light over darkness, a theme repeatedly underscored by the Lubavitcher Rebbe in general and with regards to Chanukah in particular. Echoing the Rebbe’s oft-cited quote of the Sages, Rabbi Oirechman said that “a little light dispels a lot of darkness,” and called upon the assembled to do “everything we possibly can” to bring light to the world.
Also in attendance was Mrs. Chanie Oirechman, Chabad of Tallahassee’s co-director.
In response upon the rabbi’s conclusion, Gov. Scott thanked Rabbi Oirechman for always explaining each Jewish holiday’s message “in such a practical way,” adding thanks for what the Oirechmans and Chabad do for Jewish families throughout the state.
