Over 845 students from 35 day schools around the world creatively interpreted the theme of Ahava-Love, through drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography and digital art for the RAVSAK Beit Midrash Art Competition.
Winning first place in the drawing category, was Dasi Sessel, a 12th grader from Rohr Bais Chaya Academy in Coral Springs, Florida.
Rohr Bais Chaya Academy for Girls, located in Coral Springs, Florida, has served as the only accredited Chabad High School and dormitory in the country.
With the guidance of her renowned art teacher, Loren Stein, Dasi and her fellow classmates have developed their artistic talents beautifully, and this award testifies to her growth.
“To so many people, ‘Jewish art’ means Judaica, a menorah or a mezuzah case decorated with some Hebrew letters,” said Mrs. Tanya Rubin, Secular Studies Principal. “Our students know better. That’s why RAVSAK began its student art contest, Artists’ Beit Midrash, which picks a theme and solicits creative submissions on that theme. The program encourages students to use their imaginations, to challenge the traditional definitions of Jewish art, and to push the boundaries of their own potential. Not only do they submit artwork, they also write an accompanying piece to explain the concept behind the art, thereby demonstrating their understanding of the theme.”
Dasi’s selection highlights the hashkafa of the incredible meaning in the role of a Jewish woman as a mother.
“In today’s day and age, when so many women are focused elsewhere, it is rewarding to see a high school student deeply internalize this message, and express it so beautifully,” Rubin said.
Rohr Bais Chaya Academy has just kicked off its largest fundraising effort of the year, but with two unique changes.
All contributions are being matched by a group of generous benefactors, but the fundraiser is running an entire week rather than a day.
Additionally, a unique programming effort spearheaded by Rabbi Menachem Gansburg of Matchathon.com, has enabled the school to have recurring donations that will be paid in full over the course of a year, to be matched immediately. The ability to pay out your donation rather than only accepting an immediate payment in full, has enabled many alumni and supporters to commit to support the school with a higher contribution.
