The Catholic-based private St. Thomas University in South Florida, with a business school, law school, arts and sciences, psychology school and a ministry school, has officially embraced having a Chabad on Campus Rabbi and Rebbitzen.
Rabbi Mendy and Tzippy Weiss, the closest Shluchim to the University, bordering Miami Lakes have been trying for years to be officially recognized by the university.
As the Jewish student body and faculty has been growing primarily in the law school department due to it being convenient to all major highways in South Florida ,they’ve realized the need to provide spiritual, social and religious needs for those Jewish students enrolled who’ve been asking for years for Jewish programming and networking. With the Help of Law student Yisroel Silverman, a former Camp Gan Israel Miami head counselor, currently enrolled in this school, this has now become a reality.
“Meeting with the monsignors, ministers and deans and faculty of the University has been very productive,” says Rabbi Mendy Weiss of Miami Lakes. “They truly feel that having a Rabbi as part of faculty will enhance the Education of all those enrolled, especially the Jewish students who will take pride in their heritage and have someone to guide them on their spiritual journey.”
A first Meet and Greet with Chocolate and Sushi had an appearance of about 30 people between students and faculty.
A Model Seder is planned for next week and expecting an attendance of about 100 and a beautiful state of the art student lounge is going to be made available for classes and gatherings.
