A vehicle rammed into one of the entrances of 770 Eastern Parkway, the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters, on Wednesday evening, prompting a large emergency response.
Shmira and the NYPD evacuated the building as a crime scene was established around 770. The identity of the driver has not yet been released.
Video shared from the scene shows the driver repeatedly ramming into the shul’s double doors before being taken into custody by police. Authorities confirmed that there were no injuries reported at this time.
Due to the ongoing police activity, the NYPD is warning of road closures, traffic delays, and a heavy presence of emergency personnel in the area of Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and allow for additional travel time.
The incident has renewed attention to past calls for enhanced security measures in front of the historic Chabad headquarters. In July 2018, Crown Heights activists urged New York City to create a permanent security or pedestrian plaza in front of 770 Eastern Parkway. As part of those discussions, New York City’s Public Spaces Director Emily Weidenhof visited the proposed site on July 31, 2018.
Despite the discussions and site visit at the time, no permanent security plaza was implemented.
