Bringing Tanach to Life at Lubavitcher Yeshiva Mechina

The Mechina division of Lubavitcher Yeshiva, recently hosted an immersive and educational experience for its kita ches talmidim.

Chaim (Harvey) Herbert, a noted collector of rare archaeological artifacts from the era of the First and Second Batei Mikdashim, visited the yeshiva. He brought with him an extraordinary collection that brought the words of Tanach to life.

Mr. Herbert’s collection had authentic items from the time of Chizkiyahu HaMelech, including ancient jugs, seals, and even a complete jug of wine dating back to that time period. Among them were royal seals belonging to ministers and government officials who served during that era, offering the talmidim a tangible glimpse into the era of Malchus Yehuda.

Throughout the presentation, the talmidim were taken on a journey through the story of Chizkiyahu and Sancheriv, a story closely connected to the days of Pesach. Each artifact added depth and authenticity, transforming what the talmidim had learned in the classroom into a vivid, almost tangible experience.

A particularly engaging part was showing the talmidim how money was calculated in ancient times using original weights such as the geira, beka, and pim. The presentation also included coins from the period of the Chashmonaim, further connecting different eras of history.

Mr. Herbert himself has a unique and inspiring personal journey. Growing up with little connection to Yiddishkeit, he later encountered Lubavitcher bochurim who came to his law office in Brooklyn Heights. Through their influence, he came closer to yiddishkeit, learned Hebrew, celebrated a belated Bar Mitzvah, and became fully Shomer Shabbos.

For the talmidim of Mechina, this was far more than a presentation, it was an opportunity to see, touch, and experience the world of Tanach in a real and unforgettable way. Moments like these reinforce the power of bringing לימוד התורה to life, connecting past and present in a meaningful and lasting manner.
