A last-minute Purim mission brought unexpected joy to the small Jewish community of San Andrés Island, Colombia.
Due to the war in Israel, the local shliach was unable to return to the island and found himself stranded.
In response to the urgent need of the community, the responsibility temporarily fell upon Rabbi Mordechai Bigio, who arranged for two bochurim from 770—Moishe Wolfsohn and Mordechai Feigelstock—to travel to S Andrés and ensure that Purim would be celebrated properly.
Though the local Jewish community numbers only around fifteen people, their need for the warmth, joy, and spirit of Purim was deeply felt. With very little time to prepare, the bochurim arrived to bring the full experience of the chag: the reading of the Megillah, mishloach manot, words of Torah, and the uplifting atmosphere that defines Purim.
What began as an emergency solution quickly turned into a powerful reminder that no Jewish community is too small to deserve the simcha of a Yom Tov.
Even on a small Caribbean island, the light and joy of Purim reached every member of the community.
Those who wish to help this growing community continue to develop Jewish life on the island are warmly invited to support their efforts by donating to … so that many more celebrations, learning opportunities, and mitzvot can continue to flourish in San Andrés.
