Aliya Institute’s 5k marathon around Prospect Park to celebrate its 10th anniversary will be in accordance with halacha, organizers said.
The women’s scenic walk will begin at 9:00 am. An hour later, at 10:00 am, men will be walking and running.
At the awards ceremony and “health brunch” catered by Bunch O Bagels, seating will be separate as well.
Some of these details — of the event being separate — were not clarified on the original flyer. One of them being that the men have a choice whether to run or walk, whereas the women will only be walking.
“Halachically speaking it would be immodest to have a woman running in public,” explained Rabbi Moshe Feiglin, director of Aliya (Alternative Learning Institute for Young Adults), an organization for young adults who are not in the Yeshiva setting.
“This point was already discussed by Aliya’s rabbinical board in the early planning stages and decided that the women would only be walking at the momentous event,” he said. “Unfortunately this detail was overlooked in the flyer design and it was not clarified whether the women or men would be walking or running.”
All runners/walkers are requested to come in modest sports attire, the new flyer notes. The updated version of the flyer has been cleared by Aliya’s rabbinic board as well as by several Crown Heights Rabbonim.
Doctor Eli Rosen will be honored for his commitment to keeping Chassidim healthy and Rabbi and Mrs. Meir New will be officially welcomed as Aliya’s new Shluchim for Aliya G (a program for girls).
Feiglin promises it will be a beautiful event. “Waking up early in the morning after Selichos to support a local Chabad House is a sure way to start your new year on the right foot.”
