Across the Jewish world, a surprising new profile of the daily Torah learner is emerging. Some are newly observant, some don’t yet keep Shabbos, and some have never opened a sefer in their lives. And yet, they are studying Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya, and Rambam (some even three chapters a day!) with a consistency that would impress seasoned learners.
This is happening in communities across the globe, including some of the most far-flung places. One common thread seems to be that the weekly Torah journal Chayenu has quietly become their entry point.
From campus apartments to office break rooms, from busy commutes to late-night kitchen tables, Jews from every background are finding themselves drawn into a daily Torah rhythm they never expected to join. A man who once felt completely disconnected now begins each morning by opening Chayenu. A woman who describes herself as “not religious yet” hasn’t missed a day of the Rambam cycle in months. A graduate student keeps the print edition in her backpack and learns a few minutes at a time between classes. What unites them is not a particular level of observance, but the fact that they found this practice on their own.
At the recent Kinus HaShluchim, many shluchim described community members who surprise even the shluchim with their steady commitment to daily study. People who once felt intimidated by Torah learning now speak casually about “today’s Rambam” or a line from Tanya they saw that morning. Some have even begun messaging their rabbi with questions on that day’s Chumash and Rashi. What’s remarkable is how natural it feels for them as they discover that the daily cycles belong to them too.
This quiet movement of self-motivated learners may be one of the most significant developments in Jewish engagement today.

It’s so cool to see how many yidden are connecting to Chitas and Rambam on their own. It sets the bar for all of us. Good for 19 kislev hachlatos.
Wow. I bumped into this post, crazy how implied this is. As someone who isn’t religious at all. I find a deep sense of tranquility & calmness in my chaotic life doing chitas & rambam daily. I use the chitas app daily. I dont do it to satisfy or excuse my other non observant side. Rather a feel of satisfaction and accomplishment with it all. In a certain sense i dont honestly know why i do it. Have been a few years now. Theres something very deep i cant put in words here. More psychological then spiritual for me. This… Read more »
