European governments which have been quick in the past to condemn defensive actions by Israel are mostly remaining silent after 2 days of rockets being fired from Gaza.
After months of relative quiet, the lives of Jewish residents in the city of Sderot were disrupted by sirens and people running for cover.
The Jerusalem Post reported that while the rockets struck just as parents were dropping off children at schools and kindergartens, no injuries or damage were reported.
It came after a Palestinian projectile from Gaza exploded in southern Israel’s Eshkol region on Tuesday. In response, Israel Air Force launched airstrikes on two terror targets in northern Gaza and recorded direct hits.
An al-Qaida-linked group, Magles Shoura al-Mujahadeen, claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s rocket salvo.
UN special envoy to the Middle East Robert Serry condemned the “indiscriminate firing of rockets into civilian areas,” but called on Israel to exercise restraint, according to the Post.
“It is of paramount importance to refrain from violence in this tense atmosphere and for parties to work constructively in addressing the underlying issues,” Serry stated.
Meanwhile, Sderot residents warmly welcomed a solidarity visit by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Labkowski, Director of Beth Habad of Marseille in France.
Accompanied by Sderot Shliach Rabbi Moshe Zev Pizem, he encouraged locals to stand strong and emphasized that the Land of Israel is held most sacred and precious to Hashem.
Israel’s Minister of Housing and Construction Uri Ariel, who visited Sderot as well, thanked Rabbi Labkowski for the support he brings to the rocket-ridden city.
