How soon is too soon?
A new and innovative program is starting at Bais Chana High School in Worcester, Massachusetts; a 4- year course in Child Growth and Development for Chabad girls entering 9th and 10th grade.
Beginning in September 2012, this course will prepare students to teach in a private preschool and/or Chabad school setting directly after high school graduation.
COLlive.com spoke to Principal Chani Fogelman, who has 24 years of experience in education and graduated from the Israeli government-recognized Bais Rivka College in Kfar Chabad, about the new course.
Are 9th graders really ready for this?
They will grow together with the program. The course is divided into levels and categories which will be a combination of class time, research, and on-site experience. Taking one step at a time, the girls will happily progress in the course.
Is this instead of going to seminary?
No. Girls may still go to seminary or begin working right away.
What are you trying to accomplish?
Generally, students finish high school and then attend seminary. Seminaries offer girls a wonderful experience but the girls get only an overview of teaching methods, and are not prepared to walk into a classroom and properly teach. Many girls after seminary will take on-line college courses or go to Touro College to gain the necessary skills and management techniques to be teachers.
So your solution is to prepare them beforehand?
Correct. A girl who goes through our program will learn teaching skills and techniques that she can use any time in her future. It will benefit her at work and in her own home as well. I regret that I didn’t start this earlier so my daughter could enjoy this opportunity.
What is the general plan?
This is a four-year academic program with a concentration in early childhood education. Students will be expected to meet early childhood requirements in addition to the required high school courses for graduation. The early childhood option consists of academic and research hours as well as hands-on teaching in our on-site preschool. Girls will be trained in both Judaic and General Studies preschool curriculum.
What are some of the classes offered?
At the 9th Grade Level students will take Introduction to Child Psychology; How children develop and learn; Read and critique 100 children’s literature books.
10th Grade Level includes research child psychology and educational journals; Reading and summarizing assigned articles; Learn how to write lesson plans, develop teaching units, and assist the preschool teacher in the classroom.
The 11th and 12th Grade Levels will spend more time in the preschool, putting skills into action. How to set up the classroom, write newsletters, and plan interactive activities that will involve the parents of the preschoolers. Students will also be required to create a senior portfolio.
And once a girl graduates your high school, she can immediately teach in preschool after ?
Yes. At the end of the fourth year at Bais Chana High School, a student will earn a high school diploma as well as a certificate of completion for the Child Growth and Development Course. She will then be eligible to take a test through the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) to get the Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) which will enable her to teach preschool in a private school and/or Chabad preschool.
Who will teach the child development classes?
They will be taught by our licensed certified preschool teacher and high school staff members, and some classes will be taught by educational consultants from nearby colleges.
Will the girls also be taking classes in Judaic Studies?
Yes. The girls are fortunate to have a full advanced Judaic curriculum taught by experienced Rabbis with many years of Chinuch experience.
Rabbi Chaim Fishman has been teaching for over 50 years, and will teach Gemara, Rashi, and Tosofos. Rabbi Michael Philips will help girls master the terms of the Tanya, mamarim and Navi as well. On Fridays Rabbi Levi Fogelman teaches his famous in-depth sichah class. The girls can say with complete understanding a sicha of the Rebbe at any Friday night table.
How about secular studies?
In addition to our Judaic Studies we have a full complement of secular teachers.
Which girls are you expecting to come to Worcester?
Any out-of-town girl who is planning to leave home to attend school in another city or state should consider the program here at Bais Chana in Worcester.
Describe the community in Worcester.
Worcester is a small, very warm, Chassidishe community. Out-of-town girls are welcomed with open arms. The students will be a member of many families as they are well aware that these girls are away from home and they feel privileged to nurture them and offer assistance.

stop hating you are just jealous that you couldn’t think of it first!! and yeah it may be a small school but it is the BEST school around!!!!! morah chanie is a super smart, inteligent, inspirational women, and all your daughter would be lucky to have the honor or being called her students!!!
The truth is that, besides for Chaya Mushka Seminary in Montreal and Beth Rivkah in Crown Heights, no english speaking seminary offers a full teacher’s training program.
more schools should adopt this
so true!!!!!!!!…..worcester is the best!!!
My shabbos experiences at the abramowitz and witkes wonderful homes were really incredible, warm and inviting.
GO WORCESTER
I realy enjoyed all my years in beis chana worcester, it gave me my chayus and excitement for life. Thnx thnx!
Since when does seminary teach you how to teach???
I went to 2 seminaries – both very good seminaries, yet I did not coming out a teacher. Seminary is a year away from home to grow, discover yourself and have fun. Seminary does not teach you how to teach!!

Best high school ever!!! Loved it there! This looks amazing- I would have loved something like this when I was there. Mechayil el choyil!
To #26 and all those with similar posts…Even if you don’t end up being a teacher…how can having this course not be beneficial? It includes dealing with children (can apply to your own as well), There’s courses on child psychology, and techniques that is bound to face you whether you’re a teacher or not….(especially good for parenting). Kol HaKovod to Chanie Fogelman for implementing this course.
I am a Worcester Bais Chana Graduate and my High School years were the best! We were a small close knit group of girls who flourished personally, academically and all the while related to the community as a whole and were involved in many community projects. All of us who spent amazing years there remain very close friends till today. Rabbi and Rebbetzin Fogelman are amazing mentors and may they be blessed with Arichas Yomim Vshonim Tovos!

Has had a program in conjunction with SMC for YEARS!! Girls get most of their credits in 11th and 12th grade and complete their teaching credential in Seminary.
The Rebbe Rashab once told some one who was going to America, where are you going?..The person answered Worcester..The Rebbe Rashab responded VUSTER….DUS IS A CHASSIDISHA SHTOT…..
…….And there lies the problem……we train girls to teach before they even know if they want to teach, put them in classrooms to teach subjects that they don’t want to teach, and we get another generation of bad teachers.
P.S. Of course in 5 years time when they want a job, they’ll say that they want to teach. Girls also need a Parnoso.
P.S.S. Is this CDA credential good for all over the U.S. or just Massachusetts?
When I went to seminary, my knowledge of Chassidus was way ahead of most girls from other schools. The secular education was also very high academically and both are now helping me in my Shlichus. Proud graduate- thank you Worcester!
We went to Bais Chana and there is no better small town high school with amazing dedicated shluchim, warm Chassidish families, and such a welcoming community. Coming from a big
city we appreciated this so much!!!!
Why are they assuming that every member of the female population would like to go into the proffesion of teaching?
I would’ve loved to have had these courses when I was in Bais Chana! I also think this is a good idea for high schoolers because it can help them decide if teaching is right for them. A lot of girls go into teaching as a default before finding out they either don’t like it or don’t have the chush for it (or both). For those girls, the classes will still be helpful because I’m sure every mother can benefit from learning about early childhood development. As for the size of the school – The American Federation of Teachers published… Read more »
While this kind of program may be new to the Chabad world, programs of this nature have been operating very successfully for many years in many high schools in Massachusetts. In order for the program to be successful it needs to be started in the 9th grade. The girls work through the courses acquiring knowledge and maturity as they move progressively through the 4-year course. It is not just a frivolous course “in between yearbook work”. It is a great option for girls who think they may want to teach.
The problem we have in America is that we accept status quo.The answer that 12th grade has merit to teaching is wherin lies the problem. Its a quick fix that does not work, a few classes about teaching methods in between yearbook work etc is not the way to go. Our girls deserve better.
@Size
Yes that is the whole girls high school, in fact those girls range from grades 7 and up. Next year there is no longer going to be an elementary school either due to many people being forced out of the community. All they will have is a preschool and now they have this new preschool teaching program. how convenient.
There is much merit in teaching a course in methods
in 12th grade, because some girls do go out to shluchim
to work in pre-schools, etc. However, I totally disagree
in starting this program in 9th grade
excellent idea seminaries look out
there r other options out there i think the reason why they taught it in seminary is BECAUSE most of the girls who went there wanted to do teaching in hi school you get a more diverse group, som of whom don’t want to learn teaching since they hope NEVER to use it, but maybe as an elective…
The educating of our teachers should be left to seminarys!
Who would have thought years ago to begin training our daughters to teach beginning in 9th grade. You should be commended for trying this project,my girls are already past this stage.I guess we missed the boat, enjoy the ride…….
Go Worcester!!! There’s no place like it!
is that all the students? thats quite small even for a all girls high school? and why is everyone crowded aroung one desk? just wondering….
While it is wonderful to provide girls with early childhood courses, keep in mind a maturity is necessary to be properly prepared as a preschool teacher, and that can only come with age and experience. To discourage Seminary, is not in our teachings.
They learn lots of Chassidus for those who want to learn, But learning how to teach?? The Seminaries forgot that it was originally designed for that…. Three daughters went to Israel Seminaries…but learning how to teach only came from their shlichus experience, the years after….Seminary…
Oh finally someone put the seminarys on notice. A year in Israel ,touring does not create a professional teacher.
Go worcester!!
Although its true that our Chabad House pre school has had mixed experience with high school graduates,it will be comforting to know that we can call a high school principal to inquire about the pre school teaching capabalities of a particular graduate.
Yasher Koach
If your program works, then your saying my daughter can skip the seminary year and save me 18,000????
quite impressive!!
seminary’s are over priced vacation. it would be far more productive if girls could go work for shluchim(and GET PAID) with that kind of experience they would be treated with more respect feel more confident and be more productive.
beautiful conditions, love the brown tables, keep in up 😉
jokes jokes 🙂 HAHAHAHAHA! gosh sheesh hashem yerachem…. RABBI GREEN ROX!!!!!! GO RABBI GREEN!!
Sounds like a well thought out program, our Chabad house has had girls straight out of high school as well as seminary. It took them weeks to learn how to prepare a classroom
Thank you!!
