Of all the New York mayoral candidates, only among the Democrats is there support for an age-old Jewish practice that is fiercely being challenged by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Bloomberg has enforced new regulation that requires a mohel to obtain a signed consent form from a parent to perform metzitzah b’peh, or MBP, in which blood is sucked orally from the circumcision wound.
The City’s Health Department has claimed the procedure carries fatal health risks. The International Bris Association is challenging the claim in the federal second Court of Appeals.
Among the front runner Democrat candidates, only City Comptroller John Liu says he would outright abolish the city’s regulation of the practice, reports The Forward.
Liu recently challenged Bloomberg’s decision telling a Forward reporter that he opposed the signed consent forms and was “not in support of the changes that Mayor Bloomberg made.”
“For thousands of years, this has been a practice that has been observed by people,” Liu said. “As with most procedures, some risk is inherent. But I would certainly defer to the rabbis on this, as opposed to thinking that, well, we know better after thousands of years of this practice.”
Approximately 600,000 Democrats are expected to vote in the primaries. Outside of Manhattan, Jews account for more than 15 percent of the vote, according to The New York Times, and nearly one-third of them are Orthodox Jews.
Democratic candidate Bill Thompson said during a visit to Crown Heights in January 2013: “The government needs to respect the religious beliefs of people.” He said that he was “absolutely willing to sit down and talk” to work out the differences, according to the Forward.
Another Democratic candidate, Erick Salgado, a minister from Staten Island, gave a speech to the Rabbinical Alliance of America and called MBP “a practice that was commanded by G-d,” one that had been practiced “since G-d told Abraham to do so,” the Forward said.
Supporting the regulation against MBP are Speaker of the New York City Council Christine Quinn (D) and Republican candidates Joseph Lhota and John Catsimatidis.
Staying neutral on the subject are New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio (D) and former city councilman Sal Albanese (D). Republicans Adolfo Carrion Jr. and George McDonald have not taken positions.

Please stop splitting hairs, and stop with the nonsense. (Child services won’t accuse you of being an unfit parent for going to the Ohel, but I know some factions that dwell in 770 that might…) If there were incidents of fires caused by Menorah’s, and the fire department made you sign a waiver when you light a Menorah in Shul, would you have a problem with that? The fact is that they believe that there have been some unfortunate incidents with MBP. You may argue that it wasn’t because of MBP… regardless, they feel that they need to inform you… Read more »
Why don’t you say openly that BILL THOMPson is pro the Jewish custom?
I think the discussion needs to start with the admission that children have died or gotten hermetic meningitis fom this practice, and then we can go from there. It’s when you flat out lie about the basis of this that you lose any respect in the argument
…the school is not required to tell you that the government has “determined” that the trip is unsafe. And you don’t risk having Child Services accuse you of being an unfit parent.
You thought it was “Misnayos Bal Peh” lol that’s great. Love your additude!
You made my night! Lol
It is outrageous that these politicians should even be talking about a religious practice. The government has no place in regulating religious practices. I could care less what any politician has to say about bris milah, except that they acknowledge it is not their field of expertise and not the government’s place to mix in.
blatantly anti religious paper
i thought mbp stands for mishnais bal peh. to be honest i couldnt care less what the politians say about mbp…i do what i believe which is the status quo unless there is medical evidence then its a sakana. letsd see which politician is for getting rid of the 115 parking ticket…
They always end up being bad, Democrat is the way to go. It’s always been that way. Especially for religion stuff…
I really wanted to vote for Christine Quinn
What is wrong with a regulation for parental consent?
When you send your kid on a school trip you need to give parental consent
When you send your kid to camp you need to give parental consent
Heck, when your kid goes to the Ohel with his class you need to give parental consent
So, pray tell, what is the problem with Bloomberg’s regulation?
First of all, it might frighten some parents into refusing consent.
Second, the next step will be threatening parents that if they do consent this will be used to show that they’re unfit parents.
And third, if people go on consenting and the practise therefore continues, they will then use that as grounds for banning it.
We cannot allow the camel’s nose in the tent.
I would urge every conscientious voter to vote for a candidate that supports Michael Bloomberg’s regulation. Since when is it considered to be an overreach, to require parental consent for a practice that could be harmful to a child? It’s not like they are banning it. They just want to make sure the parents are on board.
what do they say?
we must speak out about this and make it crystal clear that the jewish community will not vote for anyone who is against MBP!
all communities must unite around this as one
they will not tell us how to keep torah
If you look deeper into the agenda’s all of these candidates, you will realize that none of them are good options kind of like certain election cycles in Israel…
With that said, I agree that MBP should be our red line and obviously any candidate who isn’t 100% for cutting back Bloomberg’s overreach shouldn’t get our vote…
From my little research Erick Salgado is the only decent option but I don’t think he has a chance of winning…
i will be voting based on this issue
