Two joggers out for a run on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights on Sunday didn’t expect their afternoon exercise to turn into a spiritual experience.
Passing by 770 Eastern Parkway, the Rebbe’s Shul and Chabad World Headquarters, they noticed the large crowds gathered and the lively commotion of the Tishrei month.
Out of curiosity, they stopped.
Within minutes, they were warmly greeted by young Chabad bochurim, who offered them the opportunity to put on Tefillin. Though it had been some years since they last did the mitzvah, the joggers agreed.
Still wearing their running gear, they wrapped the black leather straps and recited the Shema. One of them was seen smiling broadly as he held a siddur, while the other followed along carefully, his finger pointing at the Hebrew words.
The sight of two sweaty athletes suddenly transformed into participants in an age-old Jewish ritual drew smiles from those around them.
For the joggers, what began as a routine workout turned into an uplifting moment of reconnection with their faith — all because they decided to take a closer look at 770.
