To those who made an effort to answer my question in a way that can make sence ‘scientifically’, I say thank-you. As a Lubavitcher who always enjoyed science these types of questions bother me. However whenever such questions are asked, generally the attitude in Chabad is to ignore the question with ‘science is not always right” or “science keeps changing”. Such answers are never satisfying, and the general feeling I get is Chabad is not looking for truth or accuracy. Questions or contradictions are just shrugged off as unimportant. This may be an appropriate approach to those who haven’t studied… Read more »

if you have some accurate scientific information to share, that’s lovely, but it could be done in a loving way, as well….

If what u say is true, why do farmers (since beginning of time) go to all the bother to dig up the ground and put seeds in, why dont they just leave them on top or not bother putting them on the ground at all! I think you’ll agree that although as an experiment you may see part of a shoot starting to grow, you will not get a fully developed tree or produce growing to their full development in the way you have described. I see the point your’e trying to make, but the fact is seeds need to… Read more »

Great idea but ...
August 22, 2013 2:27 am

This is an amazing way to communicate ideas in chassidus to the entire population of the world. It’s really great! Catchy video, good animation, good narrator, short length, focused theme, etc…But it misses the mark because very few ppl (who are not already familiar with chassidus) will understand the point. This video is 95% mushul and 5% nimshul. At the very end of video, there are almost no examples of how a person can accomplish this goal in his own life ie. loosing your self (your seed) and becoming a totally different, higher person. The ppl making the video have… Read more »

The idea is that the seed loses its “self” in order to become a tree. You’re missing the metaphor by getting stuck on semantics. Does the seed grow into a bigger seed? No – it destroys itself – its shape, its seediness, whatever makes it a seed (self-nullification) in order to advance into a greater form and become a tree.

Just sayin

Comment 15 Just because I think the whole Shmideo group is awesome, and because I think this can have a happy ending: Some seeds will not be able to germinate until the seed coat has been damaged so that water can enter and the embryo can respire. The seed coat may be damaged when the seed is in the soil. The soil particles rub against the seed coat and wear it away. The seed coat may be decomposed slowly by micro-organisms in the soil or it may even be damaged by fire. Fire is important for some seeds of Mediterranean plants.… Read more »

we want more!! kudos to the artist too- fantastic!!

scientifically inaccurate
August 20, 2013 10:37 pm

Seeds do not decompose fully to dirt before germinating. Nor do they need to rot. This is a typical elementary school experiment. Take a bean, or a wheat seed or barley seed and leave it in or on some moist cotton wool on a plate or in a glass jar, in some light, and a few days later it will germinate and sprout a small stem and small roots, without decomposing into dirt. True this discrepancy will not bother someone with no secular or science education. But if you are targeting people who have exceeded grade six science, this may… Read more »
