On Sunday, 12 Elul, West Coast Shluchim held their annual Kinus HaShluchim. This year however, it was held in a very special place – where Rabbi Yitzy Hurwitz is the Shliach.
The Kinus, with the theme of Simcha, Bitochon and Emunah, was held here in order to give chizuk to Rabbi Hurwitz who battling ALS, one of the most dreaded diseases known to mankind.
The Kinus was organized and led by Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin, head Shliach of the West Coast. At the event, Rabbi Cunin reminded all present of the powerful zchus of a Shliach and how the Rebbe continually looks out for every one of his Shluchim. He was confident that Yitzy will have a refuah shleimah ukrovah in a miraculous fashion.
Rabbi Hurwitz addressed the assembled Shluchim and in a most powerful fashion underscored how it is bitochon, emunah and simcha that help him overcome the challenges he faces on a daily basis. He remarked how confident he is of his upcoming yeshuah and how important it is to have a positive outlook regardless of what nisyonos may come your way.
In addition to Rabbis Cunin and Hurwitz, other inspirational speakers were the Shluchim Rabbis Yehoshua Binyomin Gordon of Chabad of the Valley, Yonah Fradkin of Chabad in S. Diego, Naftoli Estulin who caters to the Russian community in Los Angeles, Chaim Hanoka of Pasadena, Chaim Shaul Brook at CSUN, Alter Tenenbaum of Irvine and Simcha Backman of Glendale. Rabbis Sholom Ber Kessleman and Binyonim Fajnland shared fascinating shiurei Torah on pertinent topics.
During dinner, sheva brochos were recited for the recently married daughter of neighboring Shliach in S. Diego rabbi Dovid Smoller.
The Farbrengen at the Kinus went into the early hours of the morning and all participating Shluchim were deeply inspired by the incredible day. As one Shliach mentioned, “we came to give chizuk and inspire Yitzy, but it is Yitzy who ended up inspiring us in a way that nobody else can.”

I was on the Camp Emunah Travelling Shluchos Program and Rabbi and Mrs. Hurwitz stopped by to see their daughter and share a few words. Their simcha in the face of hardship changed me and in the merit of all of our tehillim and his family’s incredible simcha, Yitzchok ben Bracha will have a complete refuah Shleima!
I’m overcome with emotion everytime I read abou what u r going through. I remember years ago sitting with a couple of our mutual friends and your name come up. I still remembrer how it was mentioned in awe how you always put others first. For example you always pour a drink for the other person b4 doing so for yourself. (By the way, since that conversation which took place like 20 years ago I try to emulate this beautiful practice).
May Hashem “put you 1st” and give you many happy years full of simcha and gezunt!
