Over the last several months, the number of assaults against Jews in Crown Heights (and in the greater NYC area) have spiked. How should we address the problem? What would you do if you were suddenly attacked in the street? Can you rely on the police and neighborhood patrol groups to deal with these attacks as they occur?
Unfortunately, responders need at least several moments (if not several minutes) to arrive, leaving you to fend for yourself until then. You might feel prepared to defend yourself “if someone starts” with you, but street attacks generally don’t have a “start” — the assault comes unexpectedly; it is a cold-blooded ambush. Now, how do you expect to effectively respond AFTER getting hit “out-of-nowhere” with a brick to the head or pummeled from all sides by multiple attackers?
Most people know that maintaining a high level of alertness in the street is crucial for avoiding an ambush, but few have a thorough knowledge of the things to look for that could signal an imminent attack. What body language might tell you that someone is preparing to hit you? What strategies do criminals employ in order to set-up an ambush? How can you make yourself a less likely target?
Michoel Shapiro has taught self-defense for over 20 years and is the founder of the Krav Combat Academy. In the following video, he shares some information to increase public awareness about how violence in the street unfolds so that you can identify and deal with it proactively.

Great video, worth the 20 minute watch 🙂
I know a teen who, a year ago, when attacked (not in NY), used the Krav Maga techniques learned a few years prior from Rabbi Shapiro, and, baruch Hashem, things did not escalate between the attacker and the teen.
The next time Rabbi Shapiro teaches in Crown Heights, I give my highest recommendation that you learn from him! He is knowledgeable, experienced, AND wise!
(PS: No one asked me to write this! ‘Just sharing what I know here.)
much more than the waste-of-time demonstrations
Wow what an amazing videos!!!
I will def get my kids to watch it
I’ve taken Rabbi Shapiros Krav Maga class and learned so much about how to be more aware about self defense and the correct way to defend myself in many different scenarios.
