By a 770 Bochur
I’ve just finished learning seder, and here I am again – standing in line with dozens of other bochurim, waiting for food. The minutes tick by slowly. These are precious moments I could be using to review for my upcoming smicha test or catch up on Chitas. Instead, we all just stand here watching time slip away.
Every bochur in this line has something better they could be doing right now. That’s the real cost of these waits. When you add it up, the average daily wait is 10 minutes – multiply that by three meals a day, and you’ll see how much Torah learning time we’re wasting. This isn’t just my problem. Look around and you’ll see dozens of bochurim, all of whom paid good money for room and board, standing here doing nothing but getting hungrier and more frustrated.
Let’s talk about breakfast – the one meal they actually get right. You can get porridge, eggs, cereal with milk, make your own salad, and grab a coffee. But then look what happens the rest of the day. In 770 they throw out some chocolate chip cookies in the morning that aren’t even enough for everyone. Meanwhile, the 1414 kitchen sits empty when it could easily have coffee and proper mezonos available. Do they expect us to function from 7:30 until after the Rebbe’s minyan at 10:45 on nothing but a cookie – if we’re lucky enough to even get one?
The evening situation is just as bad. Last meal at 7:00 PM sharp, and then nothing. We’re learning seder sichos and typically don’t finish until midnight at the earliest. You try concentrating on learning when your stomach has been empty for five hours.
But nothing – and I mean nothing – compares to Motzei Shabbos during summer zeman. Picture hundreds of bochurim packed onto the steps, waiting for over two hours past when they said they’d open. Two hours! They tell us one time, write another time, and then actually open whenever they feel like it. And during winter zeman? Most of us finish our Shabbos seudos by three, but the kitchen stays locked until seder ends at nine-thirty at night. That’s six and a half hours with nothing to eat.
Here’s what makes this especially frustrating: we’re paying for this service. This isn’t some free handout – this is literally our money. Yet the Hanhalah, who haven’t taught us anything or reached out to us all zeman, suddenly have all this control over something we’re paying for.
The solutions should be obvious to anyone running a yeshiva kitchen. First, these ridiculous lines need to stop – we’re learning in a yeshiva, not waiting for concert tickets. The Motzei Shabbos timing needs to be fixed once and for all; we can’t have hundreds of bochurim waiting around hungry for hours after they said they’d open. Food needs to be available when we actually need it, and we need something substantial to eat during those long gaps in the day. And let’s talk about the food quality itself – lunch and supper are basically the same bland rotation day after day. Would it kill them to add some variety? To cook vegetables that aren’t overcooked? To serve meat that isn’t dry? Breakfast proves they’re capable of providing good food with actual choices – why can’t lunch and supper meet the same standard?
But even more importantly, start treating us with some basic respect. We came here to learn, not to waste hours of our day standing in lines or going hungry. The Hanhalah needs to step up and fix this mess they’ve created. We’re not asking for luxury – we’re asking for the basic service we already paid for.
If they can’t handle providing regular meals on a reliable schedule, then they should bring in people who can. This isn’t about comfort or convenience – it’s about being able to focus on why we’re really here: learning Torah. Every minute spent in these lines is a minute taken away from our learning. Every hour spent hungry is an hour we could have been more focused on our studies.
The bochurim deserve better than this. We demand better than this. And considering we’re paying for it, we have every right to expect better than this.
This is so sad, waiting on lines for food and going hungry. Such neglect and disrespect is not okay!
can donate nutritious healthy food to bochurs in need
But the point is they’re paying for this
This seems so weird and outlandish. Is this true? Seems like a sad issue for 2024
please increase the nutrition value of yeshiva cafeterias. remove all cookies. increase fruit and vegetables. lower the amount of gluten.
Definitely add fruit & veggies, but you ain’t got to remove all cookies lol
You complain about this and of course you have the right but someone who’s married or not in yeshiva wants to learn in 770 and there is no room and yet you will kick him off the seat because that’s your “makom kavua” yet who pays for the rent of 770 this isn’t only solely for yeshiva in 770
Will all due respect, if you were a 770 brochur who doesn’t have a seat where would you go? Your married? You have a home!
These bochrims home is thier seat in 770, you take that away you make them homeless.
Respect 770 and it’s yeshiva
It’s not just a yeshiva, it’s a shul first and foremost. There needs to be a mutual respect from bochurim as well as community members.
As soon as the women’s side of 770 became a bochurim’s playground, I stopped visiting, now coming only a couple times a year. I used to feel comfortable in my shul. Now it nauseates me… one yid’s hiskashrus is the loss of that of another yid…
770 belongs to everyone it’s only the right to the bochurim… learning at home compare to shul is completely different
Maybe pack up some of the extras from breakfast since there’s a lot of food then, and keep it with you throughout the day
You want them to have cold scrambled eggs and porridge for dinner?
Thats a good idea but it’s not the responsibility of these bochurim to have to save their food from breakfast for the rest of their day on a daily basis. Their responsibility is learning, not to have to save themselves for just b/c the ppl who need to don’t provide sufficient meals…
Someone must step up!
Let’s talk about Kollels who haven’t been paying for 6 months
Why can’t Lubavitch get there Gashmiyus straight?
Not a mikvah
Not food
Not buildings (yeshivos shuls)
Not support for the community
Not Chesed orgs
Or any other functional support programs for things happening in the community
And it’s crazy that we expect our bochurim to get married and learn in Kollel when rent is outrageous and EVERY SINGLE Kollel is having financial issues
Mikvas: There are no mikvas? Maybe no spas, but mikvas, there are plenty.
Buildings: Lots of buildings that have room to learn in. Many open shul’s and batei medrash.
Food: There is fully stocked a grocery store on every corner, restaurants, etc.
Support/Chessed: Regarding these I don’t know because I never needed them, BH. I wouldn’t be surprised if CH has these as well.
Let’s thank Hashem and the community for all of these wonderful things.
Or we can just complain.
how dare you !!!!
what other community has the chesed we have .. we open our community for the whole month of tishrei for guests and many other times a year
we have CSSY … we have TEN YAD we have KSCVK devorah benjamin .. we have org that provide meals fornew mothers .. we have food distributions …
and many more to mention
we can always do MORE but dont put us down ..
Why are so many people learning or visiting ch having this problem?
Whether boys or girls.
Hard to find a place to stay and according to this guy not much food etc.
There’s some chesed but can definitely get way better!
This is a prevalent issue in many yeshivos. When I was a bochur, I often felt awful due to the lack of adequate food. Not only was the food subpar, but we also had to spend a long time waiting in line for it. Moreover, yeshivos often fail to provide nutritious food, which is essential for a growing bochur. This problem is especially pronounced at places like 770, where hundreds of bochurim mean even longer wait times. I don’t have a concrete solution, other than suggesting that yeshivos allocate more funds toward food provisions. At the end of the day,… Read more »
Other yeshivos gotta deal with the same problem too
A bochur shouldn’t have to go hungry multiple times a week because the yeshiva is serving barely edible food
or pesticides. they are toxic to the human body and soul.
They need to be eating healthy and nutritious food!
The idea that gmo is unhealthy is actually a myth
Make 770 Healthy Again!
The bachurim in 770 have so much humility they rather just be in silence over this matter thanks for speaking out and hope this seemingly simple issue gets fixed. Maybe Moshe Rubashkin can consult on how to get this fixed
Dear Bachur, I hear your frustration. I am sorry to hear that sometimes you subsist on nothing but cookies. However to make this letter more effective perhaps write a RESPECTFUL petition and have all the bachurim sign? speak to the vaad Hagashmi if there is one or have the parents get involved. There really is nothing much any regular person that is unaffiliated with the Yeshiva can do for you. If there is, please let us know. The Bachurim that come to learn here for the year are the role models for our children.
He never has to subsist on cookies. He is referring to the little snack that he eats in the morning (before davening and breakfast) so as not to daven on an empty stomach (aka mezonos faren davenen).
Thinking that perhaps the Rubashkin Sukkah should be operational year round, Chop Clop in Gait Vaiter.
And who’s paying for that?
Author sounds so entitled . I maybe best to stay in Israel maybe they will take better care of you ! The new Bochurim have zero respect for locals or for their surroundings . They provide meals you just don’t like what they serve . There is A way how to ask not demand! Sounds like a list of demand . Not a way to make change happen .. speak respectfully to your elders . How about solutions . Make a go fund me to help with your cause. Of food deliveries .. so you can get it at your… Read more »
I agree that the author is overdosing on entitlement, and his complaints lack substance.
However, I must point out that this bochur is definitely not an Israeli. The 770 yeshiva is also for (at least) an entire grade of American bochurim.
Girl eating out in Israel is wrong on so many levels, including/mainly the fact that parents are paying upwards of $20,000 for one year in seminary and you think that its OK and justified. I bet you never had a girl in seminary and maybe never had somebody in yeshiva!!
It’s a free market. You’re asserting that it’s your money and they should provide a better service, well why don’t you take your money someplace else? The Hanhalah treat you as they please because they know you won’t actually put your money where your mouth is.
Which other yeshivos are there for 21-23 year olds in crown heights?
Which yeshiva gives more than 3 meals a day?
7:00 is a normal time to eat supper (even late for some) and according to halacha and health guidelines a person should not be eating after that
Just because EVERY OTHER YESHIVA IN LUBAVITCH has this problem – that does NOT mean it’s ok!! It means that this issue must be taken care of in the other yeshiva as well
when i was learning in Tzfas there was always plenty of hot tea and coffee in the morning with biscuits, and after seder in the evening there was always bread with tuna and chocolate spread available for those who wanted an evening snack.
Not that this was perfect, but trying to show the point that it is possible to try.
no one needs coffee. everyone would be better off quitting coffee. i’ve tried drinking coffee probably less than 5 or 10 times in my life or less and felt AWFUL every single time. i never drink it ever.
Coffee is not a healthy hydrating drink.
Drinking a cup of coffee is almost as hydrating as drinking a glass of water, because the water content outweighs the caffeine content. Look it up
Google: Is coffee healthy
One of the healthiest drinks that exists.
According to every medical research, daily drinking of 2-5 cups lowers the risk of many illnesses and increases lifespan, and increases metabolism, lowers depression, increases brain function, etc. etc.
We have heard the same things from our son. We pay a lot for our son to eat there. We expect there to be enough food, at the appropriate time, without my son having to push and fight to reach it.
Finaly a bachur who stood up. more bouchrim should start raiseing awarness
Even during Tishrei the lines aren’t 10 minutes.
During the year it is max 5 minutes.
3 meals a day is a normal amount of meals to have. Which yeshiva gives snacks throughout the day?!
As a Bochur who learned in many Yeshivos, 1414 actually does a great job managing the food. If anything it’s the MOST well run aspect of 770. Not sure what you are complaining about.
This whole article is either lies or totally unreasonable demands that don’t exist in any other Yeshivos.
Seriously?
From your article, it’s clear that this is not your first year in the Yeshiva. If during the summer you felt that you weren’t getting your money’s worth, why did you return for another year?
Why don’t you act like any normal Bachur and rent a room in a basement and arrange your own food?
Solve the problem don’t run away from it
The parents to have to pay for it?
Some may but what if this boys parents can’t pay $500 a month?
When you fix the spiritual problems of yeshiva by hiring a bunch of new staff and overhauling Seder chassidus you still can’t win cuz now bochurim still have to complain so it’ll just be about how they have to wait in line for food. Which isn’t even a good taaneh anyways cuz you could always learn something while waiting. Also there’s no waiting by breakfast and by lunch the line is much shorter and besides tishrei has passed so it’ll be short even by supper pretty soon. Bekitzur maybe complain about how there aren’t any good shiurim in nigleh or… Read more »
the ruchnius the bochur should take care of, the gashmius must be taken care of whos in charge. and make sure good food is available. stop acting like your cassidish
This is totally over exaggerated!
The average wait time is no more than 4 minutes.. and usually faster. Now that last years kevutzah left, it should go faster.
But you have a point about that there should be some kind of snacks and fruits that bochurim can take through out the day, that would be nice if that works out, but that’s for sure a extra.
If you have your complaints try talking to Zarchi and good luck.
Because no one listens.
While your complaining about the food and wasting time, can I complain about how bochurim aren’t in their own “velt”, I dont know which world in their minds they are but when i ask for directions, no one is here to answer and they just pass by me as if I dont exist. Are these the bochurim who are the most friendly for tefillin on mivtzoyim but for directions they space out?! hello?!
Many crown heightsers are the same in that they’re so friendly to certain people but obnoxious to others.
Sassy and all that. Residents themselves have mentioned that to me.
It’s not a welcoming place.
Why are Lubavitcher Yeshivos so oblivious to and neglectful of the Gashmius of their Talmidim? Other Yeshivos aren’t like this! They treat their Bochurim like Mentschen. The stories I’ve heard from my husband from the 80s are terrible—apparently he and his Kvutzah were told this is Iskafya and they should focus on Ruchnius—but it was wrong then and it’s even more horrifying now when we’re dealing with a weaker generation. Ahavas Yisroel needs to be directed towards Unzer no less than to the rest of Klal Yisroel. Treat them with the respect due to Lomdei Torah and B’ezras Hashem they… Read more »
Hi, as they say welcome to 770, looks like your new.
I would like to strongly argue.
I believe this is one of the best yeshiva lunchrooms with decent food schedule, and definitely organized.
Yes they can work on some gaps. Yes they can always improve on some meals.
But I think this is coming from a spoiled person who hasn’t been to other places..
This is one of the best you’ll get in the whole lubavitsh.
Again they definitely can improve on some days. But I think this article is a bit overdoing it.
Consider starting to make your own meals. Getting a mini fridge and an electric stove it could help you . I was in yeshiva in 1414 myself, and that’s what I did to survive—thank G-D. You have to find ways to make things work. One sister went to Milan Sem another to Chitrik they both wishe they had followed my example. Actions speak louder than words. No one is obligated to do anything for you. Lechatchila Ariber.
Unfortunately appliances like an electric stove or fridge aren’t allowed in 1414
But you yourself contradict yourself in terms of amount of times you wait every day, so it definitely sounds dramatized.
And I doubt that there’s nothing to learn in 770 from Hanhala.
I hope you have enough to eat and in a timely fashion. I do think it’s important though to not exaggerate.
Great points I would add that the wait on Friday nights of winter Shabbosim is usually two and half hours, the meal only starts at 8! You can’t drink untill then because that’s the earliest they open it and let you make Kiddush! Also for many meals there really doesn’t need to be a line. For example I don’t think a bochur will take more then two or three hot dogs. (The worst is during Tishrei when there’s two different kevutzah groups. The lines then are ridiculous.) The Motzei Shabbos situation is crazy. There should be mezonos and coffee available… Read more »
I’m so happy to hear another person speaking up! It’s not ok how these systems get away with doing basic everyday needs. Nobody should ever feel hungry when they are in a system that is meant to be feeding their students. This isn’t just 770 many Yeshivas and Girls schools have the same problem. Nutrition is much needed for anyone to function properly. Thank You for speaking up!
All girl seminarian I’ve heard heard of have an overabundance of food and varieties and cater so well that many gain weight after sem
Girls in sem are gaining weight from the bread and carbs that are served by every meal, not from a healthy variety. If there isn’t enough vegetables by the meal or enough of the main dish, the girls would have to resort to eating bread. Multiply it by the amount of not such good meals and yes the girls might gain some weight. Definitely not because of a good diet
Ok I don’t know where you are living but girls seminars especially ones in isreal I won’t say names but they do not take care of their students nutrition at all. If the girls do gain weight it’s because they have to buy dinners every night from local restaurants so they don’t have to go to sleep hungry. I know many times myself experienced no parent wants to get a call from their child no matter the age that they are hungry because either there was too little dinner or none at all. All I’m saying proper nutrition is much… Read more »
Same all everywhere, ones they get the money, they don’t care about your kids, food or security.
One Shabbos a month, they provide them food & The rest of the time, they don’t even know where you’re child is for Shabbos or yom Tov.Hefker.
I’ve been in the same position a couple of years ago. I Think if Bochurim were treated with higher standards, It would subconsciously affect the way they behave. Facts.
People who are treated with respect act more respectfully
Go to the store, buy food. Cook that food into meals and walla, life moves on. I would recommend eating more protein rich meals that won’t leave you feeling hungry after meal time.
All the best,
they are paying for meals already, so why pay twice by also buying food?
maybe stop for a moment and think maybe he doesnt have money
The bachrim are right.something must be done. This is not the way they should be treated. Who is in charge of the kitchen. THE CHEF. Time for a new chef. There is an old saying. If you can’t handle the heat get out of the kitchen.
You are right on the mark bucher!! Excellent article, plus the government money
Go to rubashkin It solves all problems
maybe you can invite bochurim to eat at your house. this way you can also get the zechus of learning
There must be some kind of Mezonos during Seder and at night, theres 5 hours in between lunch and supper, I personally cannot go that long without food and it disturbs my learning abilities
Motzei shabbos is out of hand!!!
The man has a point
Thank you so much for bringing this to the attention of the community!!!
I hope things change for the better
I must say that 1414 meals OVERALL are very very decent. Probably one of the best yeshiva food there is, so ten points for that
the truth is , the main problem of the yeshiva system is the lack of food, bochurim are hungry. and therefore all other problems arise.
First start treating the streets of CH and 770 with respect. And stopping embarrassing the community and respect the police department.
Growing up in crown heights, i can also say that many residents don’t treat the streets with respect and you shouldn’t generalize and discriminate against a group of bochurim learning in 770. Don’t treat and speak to others the way you wouldn’t want to be treated.
I think that’s an unfair statement
This!
1. Who is this bochur writing to? 2. What about your ” solutions”, are solutions? 3. If as you are writing, you are paying a lot of money, maybe put this money to your own apartment, and your own food. From the fact that you are writing an article under collive, you probably have a good 3 years before you get married… and this will be a worthwhile investment. 4. Perhaps you can learn your chitas and semicha in line for your food. 5. Instead of putting your problems on all those reading this article, perhaps you can ask the… Read more »
The fact that you can’t resonate with his problems doesn’t allow you bash him(- you’re probably that bochur that skips the line for food), his point was merely to bring awareness to the bochurims plight, and as we know awareness brings change$$$$$. His solutions are on point and the change has to come from the higher ups.
PS; Don’t take this personal “for I have nothing to say nor am I here for attention I am merely trying to upset you”
Thank you for sharing, most people probably weren’t aware and I’m sure going forward there will be a solution!
What meal schedule is run at other yeshivas?
Is there usually some sort of shalosh seudos and after night seder snack served?
Are the lunch and dinner menus satisfying?
Is a 10 minute wait unreasonable when serving hundreds?
Good gashmius is definitely a major ingredient to the quality of ruchnius achieved.
I’ve been out of yeshiva for decades now, so i’ll admit my ignorance, and am willing to stand corrected. waiting 10 minutes is certainly not crazy! BTW, that would be an opportune time to ‘catch up on chitas’ or to pull a sicha out of your pocket. it would also not be terrible to spend 2 of those 10 minutes talking to a friend. I am willing to wager that someone coming on time to morning seder will find his cookies and coffee. those coming late ought not to find it. the amount you are paying is a fraction of… Read more »
In regards to what you wrote “the amount you are paying is a fraction of the actual cost of providing the food”, as a bochur who is currently learning in 770, I can tell you that unfortunately this is not the case anymore. The costs are quite high these days (way higher than they used to be for 770 – which definitely was cheap compared to what you were getting) and everyone pays full price. So it’s reasonable to expect decent service for the premium price that bochurim or their parents are paying
Getting tsa pre check to avoid a 20 minute line a few times a year is reasonable
Even though you can catch up on chitas or talk to a friend
Waiting on lines is not pleasant
Being frustrated with a 10 minute wait to be able to eat your meal twice a day while very hungry after working hard shteiging is very very understandable. (besides for the fact that a bocher who is a shomer sedorim will have this wait time cut into his break which he understandably needs.
Sounds like you getting it better than when I learnt in 770
WHAT A BIZOYOIN!
EVEN IN THE TIME OF THE REBBE RESHAB, WITH THE MEAGER FUNDS AVAILABLE, THEY HAD TABLES AND CHAIRS FOR 310 BOCHURIM. THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. SURELY THE HANHOLA CAN EXPAND 1414 DINING HALL TO ACCOMMODATE ALL THE BOCHURIM, AND BE PROVIDED OR ACCESS HOT MEALS AND SNACKS THROUGHOUT THE DAY, 24/7, WITH ENOUGH TABLES AND CHAIRS FOR THE NUMBER OF BOCHURIM 770 HAS, LIKE THEY DO AT THE HOTEL PESACH PROGRAMS. APPOINT A CATERING MANAGER.
Sometimes you need to buy your own food
It makes no sense and tears at my heart as a parent, knowing my kids go to bed hungry (the ones away in yeshiva) and there’s Noone to talk to.
We need moshiach now!
A parent who feels your pain
Hope this is a joke! This young man is grumbling over a 10-minute wait, while there are literally hundreds of bochurim here. What’s he expecting—room service at his bed and a 24/7 tea room on a highly subsidized plan? Crown Heights isn’t lacking in food. Maybe it’s time for him to grow up a bit!
He stated that there is frequently no food for many hours and there are hours-long wait times and unpredictable food schedules, all of which is unacceptable.
but not cookies. cookies are unhealthy, cane sugar is completely unhealthy, and there is no reason at all why jews should be eating cookies and cane sugar. it is bad for the body and bad for the soul. there should be 0 cookies in jewish places.
I hope you get a healthy attitude
i hope you dont have to wait. i hope you can have healthy snacks any time of the day. i hope you get as much healthy food as you need.
I hope so too
all the cafeterias should serve only organic
in the cafeterias at all
This is frustrating.
I hope this gets fixed
I was there by ס”ו and I must say I had an amazing experience – we even had a trip up to the Catskills once, and Monroe too. Of course it’s better by the summer as then more people yehee mix out of there.
1) if the waiting time is 10 min average so it’s 20 min a day since at the breakfast there is no line
2) if you go to restaurant and PAYING for it you’ll probably wait more than 10 min.
3) from memory, in yeshiva I went , there is a line for the meals.
4) I agree that they should give you coffe and cake in the morning and something at night
Just because it’s like that in other yeshivos didn’t mean it’s okay
Wait a month or two max, and there won’t be lines, and plenty of food.
Take care of yourself and supplement what you get till you have this issue solved for the greater good.
Basically they need a good Kitchen Manager
I’m a Bochur in 770
The lines are no more than 5 minutes
The food is from the best of all the Yeshivos I’ve been in.
This is all while serving 500+ bochurim
What is the meal schedule at other yeshivas?
Better morning fare and a after evening seder snack?
How are lunch and dinner?
Is a 10 minute wait reasonable when serving a couple hundred bochorim?
No doubt a good and wholesome food plan is essential to good learning
I don’t think basing this off “other yeahivos” is the solution. Yes You’re right that 1414 is one of the best when it comes to food but that doesn’t mean that certain things can be ignored because “in other yeshivas it’s worse”
Another article about “demands.”
It’s a stupid word that makes people sound entitled and angry. Write a better title
Are you aware of how much food is thrown away after each Simcha!!!
Get someone to bring all the delicious food from weddings, bar mitzvos, lchayim etc. to 1414!!! It doesnt take a rocket scientst to figure out howcto make everyone satisfied! If the hanhola cant affored the food, then appoint someone to bring the delicious food from the Simchos
I am called to pick up leftover food from Simchos. Usually the calls are after 11:00pm. Not every time am I able to pick up the food or there is too much food for me. I send messages on CH CL for people to come get food. I call organizations that claim they deliver food to families and make fundraisers for the food. I call and send messages to families to pick up food. I called bauchrim to pick up food. People don’t want it. If you know a bachor that would pick up food I have left over please… Read more »

Is this the author’s first time in yeshiva? He seems to expect yeshiva to run exactly like his mommy’s kitchen at home! These demands are ridiculous: 1. Waiting in line: I can very well imagine why they make you wait in “these ridiculous lines”: Is it to torture you? Or maybe because their yetzer harah is excited to cause some bittul Torah? Or maybe it’s simply because there are LOTS of bochurim, so it can take ten minutes for everyone to be served their food. In every single instance where many people must be served at once (checking out at… Read more »
This is the kind of attitude that allows the Hanholos to mistreat their Bochurim. Please stop making excuses!
Wow, the way this article was written just spews entitlement. But since you’re looking for solutions, here a few suggestions: 1. You can buy cheap appliances. Think of a $50 panini maker, a single stove top with 2-3 pots/pans and some spatulas. Purchase a used mini fridge and have some milk, eggs, healthy and filling essentials. Learn basic cooking skills and help yourself. This will also serve you in the long run 2. There’s a very good chance there’s no cookies and coffee in the mornings because you’re late. Consider working on your time management skills, get there on time… Read more »
You are not allowed to have appliances in 1414. So that is not a solution
If you have an issue regarding the Yeshiva, go speak to the Yeshiva staff or Hanhala. When I learned in Russia and had an issue – whether related to food, board, studies, or anything else – the Bochurim would speak to the Yeshiva members, not the Russian residents. So why are you complaining to the Crown Heights dwellers? I didn’t take your money as payment for food and make you wait in line – go speak to the 770 staff members!
Maybe our community members should speak to the Hanhala and roll up our sleeves to help the situation. This is not just a Yeshiva this is a Ruchniusdike’ force that enhances our Crown Heights community and adds to our כאן צוה ד׳ את הברכה!! And let’s remind ourselves how they are role models for our children and actually for us too. Host them for Shabbos Friday night dinner it changes the whole atmosphere of ur home!! This yid will go on to represent yidden! May he go from strength to strength! Compels a response. Moshiac now!
It is so sad to see the situation in 1414’s kitchen, but unfortunately, this is plaguing the Yeshiva system all over. It’s time the parents stop writing op-Ed’s about the Ruchniyusdike food for their children, and they should start writing about the Gashmiyusdike food for them!!
You’re saying it’s about time to stop writing about one thing and start writing about something else. And that will save the system.
I was a bachur in 770 and when it came to gashmiyos it was good there was a lot of food for breakfast lunch and supper and there was cookies in the morning and coffee plenty of food and I did not feel that it took away from my shiurim and how much do you pay for the food already your not even paying 300 dollars a month if you are paying 1000 dollars a month than just maybe you have a טענה
Refined sugar makes a person tired and sluggish. There should be no refined sugar foods given to the bochrim. I couldn’t understand why I was always sluggish and the doctor told me to remove sugar from my diet. My energy Is so much better B”H. I told this to a cousin of mine who was falling asleep while he was teaching and he took sugar out of his diet and he now feels like a mentch. The constant flow of cookies in the morning can cause many problems especially in a person that has sugar issues. I’m not referring to… Read more »
What is the official tuition for the bochurim learning in 770 for the year?
Every parent has heard how horrible the food in zal is, globally. Get at least get one head cook who knows how to cook. If you have a good cook, they know how to make even reasonably-priced food taste delicious.
BH we have a few boys, but this year is my first experience with Baltimore. My son said the food is “excellent. ” Kol hakavod!
A Grateful Parent
this will be ony for the first few months.
also come 20 minutes after they open the doors and you won’t wait or stand in line
welcome to 14
Yes. There should be a lot of revamping of systems. The acceptance of bochrim should be a lot more rigorous. Bochrim who don’t show up to seder do not belong in that system. Bochrim who wear certain insignia do not belong in 770. There are only so many seats, who should be there? There should be an overflow system to learn at other botai medroshim. Maybe one month a year the bochrim get a chance to learn in 770. 770 is the center of Lubavitch, so only boys who hanholah can be assured are of the right quality should be… Read more »
but that’s so normal, which highschool/yeshiva/sem isn’t like that?
your average school isn’t a full time restaurant, get over yourself, big deal
I wish my food issue was waiting 10 minutes, I had to have cans of tuna and packets of mayo to make sure I didn’t go hungry. I had to guard my weekly roll of toilet paper to make sure I had some since they gave each Brochure a roll for the week. They locked our bedrooms from morning to night we couldn’t even go to our room if we needed something it was a literal jail I have much more to add but I won’t all I can say is we’ve come a long way we call this white… Read more »
Your situation was worse on an extreme level, doesn’t mean the 770 bochurim situation is okay!
When I was in 770 there was no charge at all for the kvutzah bocherim
who says that that should be changed?
PRESIDENT TRUMP PROMISES TO FIX THE FOOD PROBLEM AT 770 BY APPOINTING A CATERING CZAR.
Who is responsible for this? Can we find the way to facilitate improvement? Whom do we contact,?
Clearly this is a case of Mesiras Nefesh, just like in the good old days in Russia when you were lucky to get a piece of ברויט מיט פּוטער, it strengthens your character and makes you a true Chassid. You are lucky.
Kitchens are not open 24/7 it’s not hotel , so we bought snacks for ourselves to eat when we have a craving. And seminary is not cheap.
I think back to the good old days in the 70’s and of 749 and the food we had to eat. I remember when the bochurim brought over a plate of food to the Rashag to show him the goodies that R’ Michoel A”H cooked up. We had to be resourceful and found ways to supplement the yeshiva food. I think if the yeshiva covers the basics – and from what I hear the food is ok – then you have to man up and figure it out. In life you’re not always going to get everything handed to you… Read more »
When I was learning in 770 (some 14yrs ago) someone on Union st helped me sign up for food stamps and I would buy fruits from Raskin’s and snacks from Kahn’s all the time to share with fellow bochurim. The food at 1414 wasn’t great but between farbrengens, lchaims/weddings and people dumping stuff in 770 I don’t remember ever feeling hungry (for food) while I was there.
Dear Bachur, I hear you. If I were paying for food for my son I wouldn’t be happy that he has to stand in line for meager rations. But you expressed yourself with great disrespect and sarcasm. Yes you’re angry but can you explain yourself without being so aggressive? And if you want a snack mid-morning… you have a few dollars I’m sure to buy something. I see plenty of bachurim in the eateries and groceries on Kingston Avenue. So you have to supplement? Spend less time on your cell phone and use the savings to buy a danish from… Read more »
