An event about the Rebbe’s approach to drinking alcohol was held for English-speaking bochurim in Crown Heights on Thursday evening.
The event was held in the Tishrei Tent in front of 770, and was packed with bochurim in attendance.
Mashpiim from various Yeshivos spoke and explained the Rebbe’s approach to drinking alcohol at Simchas and Farbrengens and the Rebbe’s gezaira – edict about not drinking ‘more than four,’ and how it should be applied today.
The MC for the event was Zalman Serebransky, and speakers included Mashpiim Rabbi Shimon Dexter of Crown Heights, Rabbi Noam Wagner of South Africa, Rabbi Mendel Gordon of London, Rabbi Yisroel Vogel of Crown Heights and West Coast Head Shliach Rabbi Shlomo Cunin.
Speakers addressed the history of the Gezeira against mashke, and answered questions that bochurim might have about it, such as how to react when a friend drinks more than 4, what is the Shiur of 4, and questions about seeing ‘Chasidishe Yidden’ drinking more than four.

GO Levy Klyne you are amazing
You are amazing!
What’s so hard and complicated to understand that this simple statement needs “pirushim” and deeper interpretations? 4 lechaims is the instruction of the Rebbe, thats it.
It’s really 3 but the 4th is for kiddush
thats only some mashpiem
The Rebbe was very angry when he heard people were making kiddush on mashke
Wine is also part of the gezera
