The fifth Chabad Rebbe Rashab suffered from poor physical health and traveled often to various resorts and clinics. On these trips, he took with him the handwritten manuscripts of his Chassidic discourses and those of his predecessors, which he would study from.
With such precious luggage, it was no wonder that he stood and personally watched it being packed into the wagons before his departure.
On one such occasion, the Rebbe approached the wagon driver and asked why he waited until the wagon was full to remove the wheels and grease the axels. “Would it not be easier to do so with less weight on them?”
The driver explained that doing it while the wagon was heavy made the grease work better and last longer.
The Rebbe then turned to his disciples. “This teaches us a lesson in the service of G-d: that which comes harder lasts much longer.”
