A slightly smaller crowd is gathering to mark the yartzeit of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the Alter Rebbe who founded the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, at his Ohel gravesite in the Ukrainian village of Haditch.
The 24th of Teves has annualy drawn thousands of Jews from around the world to daven and learn at the tziyun of the Alter Rebbe, author of the Tanya and Shulchan Aruch Harav which continue to guide many in their service of Hashem.
This year, with travel restricted due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers expected fewer people at the Ohel and the Heichal Admur Hazaken building where farbrengens and meals are held.
Visitors were asked to wear facemasks and obey health guidelines to protect the safety of all those present.
Among the visitors was a group of Jews from the community in Dniro, led by Chief Rabbi Shmuel Kaminetzki and Rabbi Meir Stambler, Chairman of the Council of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine.
During a Chassidic farbrengen there, a member of the group stood up the announced that in honor of his birthday, and in honor of the Alter Rebbe’s yartzeit he decided to put on Tefillin every morning until Gimmel Tammuz, the Rebbe’s yartzeit.
Participants praised his spiritual gift and were then elated to hear a friend of his also commit to doing the same every day. The Rabbis blessed them to continue growing in their observance of Torah and Mitzvos.
