Rabbi Shmuel Plotkin, a Lubavitcher Chossid from Crown Heights, returned to the city of Berdichev in Ukraine this week after many years.
Rabbi Plotkin, who is 95, was sent by the Rebbe as a Shliach to the city which was synonymous with its rov, Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berdichev, one of the most famous Chassidic luminaries.
Over the years, Rabbi Plotkin sustained the local Jewish community which was deeply impacted and shrunken during the Communist regime. He has since passed over the reins to Shliach Rabbi Moshe Thaler.
Rabbi Plotkin was joined by the Toldos Avraham Yitzchok Rebbe of Jerusalem who was in Ukraine for a visit with some of his chassidim.
Together, they shared words of Chassidus, memories of the community, stories of the Rebbe and sang niggunim.
Merkos Shlichus has sent bochurim Avi Winner and Menachem Wolf to the area this summer, to visit the locals and offer guidance and assistance to Jewish people.
