In response to the reports of a pro-Hamas rally that is being planned for this Shabbos afternoon on Eastern Parkway for 3pm, the Vaad Hakohol of Crown Heights, led by Zaki Tamir, Yossi Hackner and Fishel Brownstein, has issued a call to all shuls of Crown Heights to conduct regular Mincha services at the unified time of 5 pm this Shabbos, 13 Cheshvan, October 28.
Mincha should be followed by Tehillim (Psalms 20, 22, 69, 122, and 150) for the safety of our brothers and sisters in Israel, especially those in uniform and those in captivity.
“It is important that all men go out of their homes to Mincha on Shabbos afternoon,” said Rabbi Eli Cohen, Executive Director of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council. “News articles have been written in the last day or so implying that the Jewish community of Crown Heights will be cowering in fear in our homes. That is not our response in such a situation.”
Chairman Zaki Tamir continued, “The New York Police Department has assured us that there is no plan by the marchers, and the police will not allow the march, to come close to the areas with a Jewish population. Shmira and Shomrim will be out in force watching for any threat. But it is essential that we send a message that we will not be intimidated. When every man between the ages of 20 and 60 is out on the street, it lets the world know, without needing rallies or marches, that we are vigilant, confident and proud of our heritage and our community.”
Rabbi Chanina Sperlin, VP of Government Relations for the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, has been in constant contact with City Hall and the Chiefs of NYPD to coordinate proper protection of the neighborhood and to ensure that community members can feel safe in their homes, in shul and in the streets.
We continue to encourage members of the Jewish community to avoid the area of Washington Avenue and Eastern Parkway, Grand Army Plaza, Park Slope and Barclay’s Center on Shabbos afternoon.
THIS is the correct response.
Personally I will be visiting the Hamas protest with an Israeli flag.
Careful not to carry on Shabbos
why the assumption that a fine jew would desecrate the shabbos? he obviously means a pin on his lapel.
No, s/he can wear the Israeli flag, wrapped around the body as a large scarf or poncho
Does it require tzitzit?
I think you’re feeding into their agenda
אינהו בדידהו ואנן בדידן
When you roll with mud you get dirty.
Don’t give the רע the attention they seek.
Better spend your time among holiness and purity, actually involved in bringing more good into this world through positive, productive action: like learn something extra, engage in intentional davening, help someone out, say some more tehillim. That will annul the spiritual powers that the other side relies on for strength. May we experience miracles and wonders in peace and tranquility.
please dont do that. we need bodies in the hood
A Chosid of the Rebbe with an Israeli Flag?!!
Please don’t. You won’t change anyone’s mind and will only enrage the participants. For the sake of what?
I am not from the area and not familiar but would advise that you double check where the eiruv is so that there is no Chilul shabboss involved.
there is no kosher eruv in crown heights (i think)
FULL STOP
Whether you like it or not.
There is an eiruv which is kosher limhadrin min hamehadrin, lechol hadeios, for the whole Brooklyn. It doesn’t matter whether the CH rabbonim like it or don’t like it, the fact is that it is there. They have no authority to pretend it doesn’t exist, or to declare it possul just because they weren’t consulted. (In addition the museum is within the Park Slope eiruv, which is also kosher lechol hadeios; but that one does not extend to Crown Heights, so before the Brooklyn eiruv went up those who are machmir like the Rambam, as the Alter Rebbe recommends, could… Read more »
I would recommend those that can get trained and licensed to carry a gun, in general during times like this. We can not fully rely on the police. A lot of Shluchim are now armed. Crown heights should not be different!
The shluchim with guns in red states it’s a good thing because self defense still exists there, in New York I don’t think it’s worth it to carry a gun because you could get life in prison for trying to defend yourself
In general, not just “times like this.”
Lo aleinu, trouble can strike at any place or any time.
Carry all the time and of course get in person training and practice.
And I can’t believe I agree with you.
But I do.
They’re coming after us.
“Every Jew
A 22!”
-Meir Kahana
Max age of “60” seems unduly cautious, IMO.
20-60 is the age of draft in the Torah
Isn’t it dangerous? These people can be violent. Some simply do not value our life? To me it seems reckless to walk our children right past them and protend like thete is no physical threat.
20-60 is not children
We are in dangerous times. The Rebbe is with us, and Hashem is watching over us! Our “cousins” are coming for us, and we will erase their memory like that of Amalek, Greece, Rome, Spain-inquisition, Nazi-Germany, and every other temporary power. Hamas desecrates the name of Hashem with their actions, we will bring glory to Hashem’s name when we destroy our enemies. together. protect not provoke.
The Vaad Hakol!!!
no israeli flag just toirah and tefila and begging for moshiach
This is not a time to be flippant about chilul Shabbos chas veshalom.
Lastt time i checked crown heights is part of Brooklyn and is included by the Brooklyn eruv
100%! Careful but No hiding away in our homes. Jews are free people, we are not imprisoned with hate like they are.
B’H. Rabbi Osdoba issued a ruling today concerning the Sakkana considered for this shabis, allowing the carrying of a weapon this shabis. When carrying the weapon it should be carried with a shinuy. when it is being used if necessary, obviously, it should be handled in the most regular and safe way. the contingency of employing a shinuy is for the carrying in R’HaR, not for the use of the weapon. Unrelated to the heter, please use discretion when considering the holding or using any type of weapon, adults only, and all precautions should be taken to increase safety and… Read more »
Thank you very much Zaki 👍
You’re a tzaddik for stepping up in this time of need!
Please inform us how to go about procuring a gun and how to get good training.
In addition, where can we get pepper spray?
Tx
How much time do you have? In NY you can’t just go buy a gun…unless you’re a crook. Everyone else has to fill out forms, get interviewed, etc., etc.
LIES from likely someone outside our community wishing us harm.
Rabbi Braun just released statement that no one makes statements on behalf of the beis din, and that there is NO heter to carry a weapon this shabbos even with a shinui. Or anything else for that matter as the eiruv is halachically nonexistent.
Listen to R Brauns statement yourself circulating on Whatsapp
Released a statement to the opposite. Not allowed to carry a weapon even with a shinuy .
Blatant lie! Quite opposite the beis din said no carrying weapons this shabbos
This is a disservice and contradicts the official message of the Vaad and Chanina. There is no specific threat and the police are ready and able to handle any eventuality. If people do come to our community to do violence, you don’t need a heter.
How is carrying a weapon for self defense considered violence?
Different people can have different opinions.
We don’t censor in a free country.
And Zaki is actually facing reality of the mortal danger we’re currently facing. Lo aleinu
Zakis message is clearly a mistake or someone pretending to be him. The idea is to take it down to prevent any chilul shabbos as the Beis din said no weapons to be carried.
i think
We can’t stop living our lives… but it is irresponsible to look for trouble. Many people protesting and rallying for Palestine. Are violent and look for trouble. There have been several attacks on Jewish people – an increase compared to in the past – since the war in Israel has started.
This is the correct response! Thank you!
Yidden will not be cowards any longer! We will follow the Torah directive and defend ourselves! Never again is NOW.
Good Shabbos!
Thats what got us here.
Why I don’t see more police in crown heights?? 2 police officers in front of 770 is a joke!
Please whoever has influence, on the police department. Or the mayors office. Ask for a serious police presents.
You gonna pay for it. Tax payers dollars.
