There’s a “reasonable chance” the United States will lose its measles elimination status in October because of ongoing measles outbreaks in New York, CNN reports.
When the World Health Organization declared in 2000 that the United States had eliminated measles, it was hailed as one of the biggest public health achievements in the nation’s history. Losing that elimination status would be a black eye to the United States, public health experts said.
“We’re embarrassed. We’re chagrined,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a longtime adviser to the CDC on vaccine issues.
WHO removes a county’s elimination status when measles has been spreading continuously for one year. A measles outbreak in New York City started on September 30, 2018, and has caused more than 600 confirmed cases of measles. An outbreak in nearby Rockland County, New York, started the next day and has caused more than 300 cases.
Those two outbreaks have largely been among children in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community whose parents have refused to vaccinate them, CNN reported.
Twenty-nine other states have had measles outbreaks in the past 12 months, but those were much more short-lived than the ones in New York.
Public health experts say they did not effectively communicate to parents how dangerous measles can be, and can lead to brain damage or death.
They say that while anti-vaxxers have been spreading false information on social media, “We didn’t do enough to get a mother on camera to say ‘my child died of measles’ or had brain damage from measles,” Dr. William Moss, an infectious disease pediatrician at Johns Hopkins, told CNN.
Yes you should be embarrassed and chagrined that you also didn’t do enough to actually really make this vaccine safer (besides just proclaiming it) and ignoring the harm it has caused more children than the measles had. And why not get thousands of parents on camera to report the painful side effects this vaccine has caused.
When you post something like this it shows that you are the problem. It is people like you have caused numerous children to be dangerously ill or die, chas v’shalom. If you are willing to take that responsibility then that is your issue which you will deal with in Beis Din Shel Maayla, but please stop infecting others with your baseless spewing of nonsensical and dangerous information.
You need to get a education of the truth about the dangers inside the vile of these vaccines….. start with reading the INSERT that comes with the vaccine.
It is impossible to eradicate measles with a live virus vaccine.
American wins having the unhealthiest children from any first world country, we should be very proud what we have done to our children upping the vaccination doses from 16 to 72 in a span of 25 years . The allergies, autisim, mental health issues are off the charts. OPEN YOUR EYES.
Right on money!
What you wrote is simply not true. The number of cases of allergies, autism, or mental health issues caused by vaccines is ZERO. Not one case, out of the millions vaccinated. There are sometimes, rarely, other complications, such as allergic reactions (vaccines doesn’t cause allergies, but sometimes someone turns out to be allergic to an ingredient in the vaccine and has a reaction), but the three that you mentioned are not among them.
Media is putting lots of focus on ultra orthodox not vaccinating…
Living on Shlichus I know quite a number people that don’t vaccinate. and lots of my friends on shlichus know of families- its not just an orthodox issue- it’s all over the us.
While your correct, the reason they’re the focus is because that’s where the outbreaks are. There’s likely a higher concentration of unvaccinated kids in certain chassidic communities than the general population, which helps the disease spread.
But Orthodox communities are much more tight-knit than most, and the tiny minority who are unvaccinated or insufficiently vaccinated, or for whom the vaccine doesn’t work, are enough to sustain an outbreak if it gets in.
What’s Wrong with Religious Exemption? Trigger warning: My article below challenges the prevalent assumption that the state may mandate vaccination. I am NOT anti-vax, but just anti-coercion and pro-bodily-autonomy. If you find this view offensive or disturbing and would like to continue living in blissful ignorance while the very underpinnings of free society are under attack, then please don’t read this: What’s Wrong with Religious “Exemption?” Mandatory Vaccination and the Nuremburg Code Part I: There’s something deeply troubling about the whole debate over “religious exemption” from mandatory vaccination. It avoids the real elephant in the room. Who granted the government… Read more »
You’re literally like the guy in the mashal, sitting in the boat and drilling a hole under his seat. “What’s wrong? I paid for this seat!” Yes, you did, but that doesn’t give you the right to endanger everyone else. You want to be free of government coercion to vaccinate? Go find yourself a desert island and create your own utopia there. As long as you live as part of a larger society, though, you are responsible not to drill holes in the boat. And all of your bleating about “Nuremberg laws” and whatever – shamefully comparing public health efforts… Read more »
If we decline the STD vaccine Gardisol for our 11 year old daughter we are not doing our share to contribute to “public health efforts”? This is already a mandated
vaccine for 6 grade school enterence in 4 states . NY legislators seek this as well. The other 4 states unlike ours ,have religious/personal beliefs exemptions. Homeschool or inject your child with a STD vaccine that is linked to potential life altering fertilty problems.
Correction, HPV causes cervical cancer, not ovarian. The argument remains the same. If your daughter gets cervical cancer because you bought into some hysterical nonsense about the vaccine, neither you nor she will be happy.
Your essay is legal nonsense. You argue what “ought” to be, but the law on this has been settled for well over a century: the states have the legal authority to require vaccinations (not just as a condition of admission to schools, but for everyone), and to forcibly vaccinate anyone who resists. There is nothing in the US constitution to prevent this, no personal right of autonomy that it violates. If you don’t like it, campaign for a constitutional amendment; if 2/3 of each house of congress, and 3/4 of the state legislatures agree with you, then it will become… Read more »
Vaccine mandate laws are immoral, unjust and corrupt! This is not a socialist country and never will be..There is NO place for liability free mandated medical procedures that DO carry the risk of serious injury and death!
