United Nations – The United Nations voted overwhelmingly Thursday to recognize a Palestinian state, a long-sought victory for the Palestinians but an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for the United States.
The resolution upgrading the Palestinians’ status to a nonmember observer state at the United Nations was approved by a more than two-thirds majority of the 193-member world body — a vote of 138-9, with 41 abstentions.
A Palestinian flag was quickly unfurled on the floor of the General Assembly, behind the Palestinian delegation.
In the West Bank city of Ramallah, hundreds crowded into the main square waved Palestinian flags and chanted “God is great.” Others who had crowded around outdoor screens and television sets to watch the vote hugged, honked and set off fireworks before dancing in the streets.
Real independence, however, remains an elusive dream until the Palestinians negotiate a peace deal with the Israelis, who warned that the General Assembly action will only delay a lasting solution. Israel still controls the West Bank, east Jerusalem and access to Gaza, and it accused the Palestinians of bypassing negotiations with the campaign to upgrade their U.N. status.
The United States immediately criticized the historic vote. “Today’s unfortunate and counterproductive resolution places further obstacles in the path peace,” U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said. And U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called the vote “unfortunate” and “counterproductive.”
The United States and Israel voted against recognition, joined by Canada, the Czech Republic, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Panama.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the speech by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the General Assembly shortly before the vote “defamatory and venomous,” saying it was “full of mendacious propaganda” against Israel. He called the vote meaningless.
Abbas had told the General Assembly that it was “being asked today to issue the birth certificate of Palestine.” Abbas said the vote is the last chance to save the two-state solution.
Sharon created a de facto state by taking out the Jewish presence from Azah, then Netanyahu said that he supports creating one in an infamous speech, so why should we be surprised if our enemies simply take it to the next step?
It’s time for Jews to come out and loudly protest the UN-which should be disbanded asap! It’s a farce and not true to it’s mission any more.
Obama is very happy!
For all those that don’t know this is a very bad thing because now the Palestinians or ” gaza” can bring up war crimes against Israel…..and with a lot of anti sametics in the un they could win…..this is very serious
when will it be enough…?
what does this mean?
For Zev Ben Coachava! a IDF soilder !
Boruch Dayan Hoemes : (
Moshiach Now!!!!
And this causes even Americans who are very pro-Israel to back a two-state solution. They wouldn’t be for a palestinian state, but for Israel’s own claim that they have the right. It puts even good Americans in an awkward position, because they can’t be more pro-Israel than the Israeli government itself.
Forgive my ignorance…doesn’t Israel keep saying they believe in a two state solution? If you keep saying it, saying it, saying it, you get it.
The problem is not the UN. The problem is Israel. Israel has legitimized the UN, and basis their own legitimacy on the UN.. Israel has legitimized the “Palestinians”, Israel has been utterly schizophrenic on the issue.
‘palestine’ is now recognized by the un as a non-member state – upgraded from a non-member entity. it basically means they have more of a say at the un
The Rebbe himself, said not 2 call them Palistinian, bec it shows ur recognizing their claim 2 the Holy Land. It’s not theirs, they have no rights 2 it.
CHABAD WEB SiTE SHOULD KNOW BETTER BEFORE POSTING HEADLINE GRABBING STATEMENTS LET IT BE CLEAR: THIS WAS NOT RECOGNITION OF AN ENTITY BUT SIMPLY A MEANINGLESS UPGRADE FROM NON ENTITIES TO NON MEMBER STATUS- “NOT STATE”
WHEN YOU 30 ARAB STATES, 30 ISLAMIC STATES, 30 ARAB STATES, AND 50 THIRD WORLD AFRICAN STATES VOTING, IS IT ANY WONDER?
ABBAS IS HEADING FOR THE ABYSS! AND ONE MORE THING, DON’T CALL IT PALISTINIAN. WHY? LISTEN TO INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR ULMAN NOBEL PRIZE WINNER AND ARUTZ SHEVA.
Nothing new here. Nothing to fear.
Hashem should help us…!!
And how is this chabad news?
By posting this story on col you give our enemy’s a platform
What does this mean literally? Can someone explain?
The REBBE wouldn’t call this a dark day. Just the opposite now know can try saying that the UN is truly a peace loving institution. With this vote they have shown their uselessness.
theyre crazy!!
