R’ Tzvi and Itty Ainsworth, a Chabad couple, were killed in the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo building in Surfside, Florida, which collapsed on June 24, 2021, at approximately 1:25 a.m. EDT.
Tzvi was 68 years old and Itty was 66 years old.
The Australian-born Tzvi was visiting in Montreal, Canada, where he met Itty Fellig. The two married and lived in Miami and then settled in his native Australia, first in Sydney and then Melbourne.
They raised a family of 7 children. Though modest and reserved, the Ainsworths are noted for their hospitality and devotion towards helping those in need in their quiet and unassuming manner, Chabad.org wrote.
“Every person she encountered, ever in her life, became her friend. Everyone was treated as equals,” Chana Wasserman wrote about her mother last year. “The guy at the laundromat, the guy working at the fruit market …”
Although Itty suffered from chronic pain, her condition didn’t hold her back from spreading her warmth and love with all those she met, Chabad.org wrote. A strong proponent of positive thinking, she constantly looks at the bright side of life celebrating life’s small joys.
“I know I will never be able to match my mother’s pure enthusiasm for life but it’s inspiring to watch,” Wasserman wrote.
In recent years, the Ainsworth couple moved to South Florida to be closer to their children and grandchildren, as well as many members of the extended Fellig family. One daughter lives just a few blocks away from the Champlain Towers. The Ainsworths had recently celebrated the birth of two grandchildren.
The couple was in the 12-story beachfront condominium in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida, when it partially collapsed. They were one of the over 150 people who were pronounced missing and for whom prayers were made around Florida, Australia and the world.
On Monday, July 5, Miami-Dade Police confirmed their deaths and wrote: “We have identified two additional victims that sadly and unexpectedly lost their lives in the tragic Surfside building collapse. Please keep their families and loved ones in your prayers.”
They are survived by their children, grandchildren, and siblings.
The Levaya will take place Tuesday in New York, passing 770 at 2:30 PM and burial at Old Montefiore Cemetery at 3:30 PM.
