This past Sunday evening over 500 people from the broad spectrum of the community gathered at the Minneapolis Jewish Community Center to commemorate the lives and mission of the Shluchim to Mumbai, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg, HY”D.
The event was cosponsored by Upper Midwest Merkos Chabad Lubavitch and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas.
Rabbi Mendel Feller chaired the evening with Mr. Steve Hunegs. Rabbi Manis Friedman began the program by sharing words of encouragement in the time of crisis from the teachings of the Rebbe.
The Rav of Kehillas Bais Yisrael in Minneapolis, Rabbi Moshe Tuvia Lieff led Tehillim and shared words of Hisorerus – “awakening”.
Ben Gerber, a law school student reminisced about the time he spent at the Chabad House in Mumbai. Ner neshama memorial candles were kindled by the Shluchim as the message of redoubling the Rebbe’s goals was shared. Mr. Hunegs Read the letters from President Bush, the president elect and the Governor of Minnesota.
Afterwards, a moving video produced by JEM inspired all of the assembled. Rabbis Asher Zeilingold and Gershon Grossbaum led the tefilla in memory of the Kedoshim.
A representative of the Indian community conveyed the feeling of the people of India.
Rabbi Moshe Feller, Head shliach to the Upper Midwest, issued the “Call to Action” for everyone to add a Mitzvah, and everyone recited the evening Shema together. Special forms were distributed and people wrote down the mitzvos that they accepted to keep and/or improve. This was forwarded to the families of the Kedoshim, Hy”d. The evening ended with Mishnayos and Kaddish.
