A moving event took place last week in Israel, as a new Torah was welcomed in memory of the 8 members of the Atar family, who perished in a horrific car accident in October.
The entire Atar family – 45 year old Yariv, 47 year old Shoshi, and children Yaakov Yisrael, 12; Ateret, 11; Ayala, 9; Moria, 7; Yedid, 5; and Avigail, 3, were wiped out on their way to a family trip in southern Israel.
Their car was hit by a jeep being driven by a driver who was suspected of using prohibited substances before getting behind the wheel.
The father, Yariv, worked for a computer company and the mother Shoshi was a special education teacher at Keren Or in Jerusalem. The children attended elementary school and preschools in Psagot and the eldest son attended the Yeshiva High School in Mateh Binyamin in Beit El.
After hearing of the tragedy, Lubavitch businessman Rabbi Sholom Hurwitz of Flatbush says he was moved to the core and decided to dedicate a Torah in the family’s memory.
He went on to donate and raise the funds to commision for a Torah to be written in their everlasting memory and was able to accomplish this in a short time.
The completion of the Torah took place at the family’s home in Psagot in Binyamin, Israel, and was attended by hundreds of the Atar family’s community members, family and friends.
