Theme: Can You Love G-d When You Hate Yourself? The Conflict Between Yosef & Yehuda.
Program:
Talk 1:
What gave Yosef the power to withstand the powerful seduction of Potiphar’s wife in Egypt? The Talmud and Midrash state that at the moment of truth Yosef saw the visage of his father Yaakov and that is what empowered him to abstain. But why? What was it about the visage of his father that so affected him? A reflection on the nature of the human soul and its majestic essence and potential.
Talk 2:
“Taste and you will see that G-d is good,” Rabbi Schnuer Zalman of Liadi declared. Our calling today is to introduce a healing Judaism, one that allows people to declare: “G-d is good!”
Talk 3:
“Behold, days are coming, says God, and I will send famine into the land, not a famine for bread nor a thirst for water, but to hear the word of G-d.” So predict the prophet Amos. What he means is that there will come a day when spiritual bread and water—the study of Torah—would be abundant. But what the people, especially the youth, will be searching for is to find G-d in the Torah, to experience “deveikus,” genuine intimacy with Hashem. But how?
Talk 4:
Understanding the deeper conflict between Yehudah and Yosef in this week’s portion of Vayeishev. Does the path to G-d demand self-actualization or self-transcendence? Yosef claimed that to know G-d you must first know yourself. You can’t accept G-d if you don’t accept yourself. Yehudah argued otherwise. Who was right?
