A fast is observed today by all adults in commemoration of the 3-day fast called at Esther’s behest before she risked her life to appear unsummoned before King Achashveirosh to save the Jewish people from Haman’s evil decree.
The fast also commemorates Esther’s fasting on the 13th of Adar, as the Jews fought their enemies.
No food or drink is partaken of from daybreak to nightfall. Pregnant or nursing women or people in ill health are exempted from fasting.
· Giving of “Half Coins”
In commemoration of the half shekel contributed by each Jew to the Holy Temple — and which the Talmud credits as having counteracted the 10,000 silver coins Haman gave to King Achashverosh to obtain the royal decree calling for the extermination of the Jewish people — it is customary to give three coins in “half denomination” (e.g., the half-dollar coins) to charity on the afternoon of the Fast of Esther. (In many synagogues, plates are set out with silver half-dollars, so that all could purchase them to use in observance of this custom).
· Read Megillah Tonight
The festival of Purim [ http://link.chabad.org/go.asp?li=4BCF05BB3D9B0476&ui=57FADBB79F0BE812AABFF76C6FCA4A9D ] begins at nightfall tonight, and the Megillah (Book of Esther [ http://link.chabad.org/go.asp?li=75B4A0979B470B1F&ui=57FADBB79F0BE812AABFF76C6FCA4A9D ]) is read for the first time this evening. Look in Lukktie Sichos Vol 6. The rebbe clearly learns that the fast was for ester was the only one who fasted by the war. The Din is that anyone who goes to war or the is involved is forbidden to fast. now being that the decree was on EVERYONE, therefor ester was the only one who could fast. If it had to do with the three days she fasted to prepare herself, than we should commerate it on pesach.look in the back of vol 6..
learn basics before commenting! (no offence) that fast was on pesach!!!
the fast finishes at 7.27. one can not end fast before nightfall
its called taanis esther also because she was actually the only person that fasted!
everyone else was out to war and therefore could not fast!!
See shevach hamoadim, including the notes on the bottom where it excpliccitly states that the fast is not because of Esthers fasting.
A freilichen Purim to you too
what does buying? mashkeh got to do with taanis esther.

what? so why is it called taanis ester? its a fast because ester ttold all the jews to fast for 3 days so we for 1
tho it would make sense, y is it on 13 adar? for the war that was then
but dont say ‘the fast is ONLY because of the war on 13 adar,’

See shulchan aruch, the fast is only because of the war on 13 adar, also see shevach hamoadim
