You can learn about the Baal Shem Tov from your local rabbi or by going to… the theater.
The first animated feature film about the life of Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov, 18th century founder of the chassidic movement, is scheduled to be screened next week in Beverly Hills, California.
In “Master of a Good Name,” over 100 hand-crafted fully animated dolls come to life in their poor wooden Shtetl towns and find hope in their spirituality thanked to their human kindness.
“Treasures of wisdom often come from humble hearts,” reads the film’s description. “Follow the Baal Shem Tov in a journey through Eastern Europe during the 18th century, as he changes the soured face of Judaism into a celebration of life.”
The Baal Shem Tov revolutionized and breathed new life into a fainting Jewish nation. The effects of his teachings continue to be felt today—both by chassidim and by followers of all other streams of Jewish thought.
4 years in the making, the 80 minute film was directed and produced by Tawd b. Dorenfeld and is said to be suited for the entire family.
It features the voices of actress Mayim Bialik, comedian Roseanne Barr, Israeli cantor and stage performer Dudu Fisher, singer-songwriter Peter Himmelman and others.
One of the screenwriters of the film is Dovi Trappler, a Lubavitcher from Crown Heights.
“I personally concluded that the lack of irony in his work – the authenticity to the Chassidic tale it was spinning – was refreshing and authentic,” a reviewer wrote on Cinema Speakeasy.
After originally being scheduled for Tisha B’Av, organizers decided to move the one-day screening at the historic art deco Saban Theatre at 8440 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills, California.
“I would like to apologize for the irregular date,” said Dorenfeld. “We strive to preserve the integrity of the Commandments as we have been mindful to do so during the entire filming and editing process.”
The new showtimes will be Sunday, July 21 at 11am, 2pm, 5pm (and possible 7:30pm). Entrance fee will be $9 online or $10 at the door. Kosher food will be made available for purchase.
