Rabbi Sholom Ber Schapiro, Director of the Nissan Mindel Publications (NMP), presents “Historic Treasures.”
Each program shares ‘treasures’ from the archives of Rabbi Schapiro’s father in law, Rabbi Dr. Nissan Mindel OBM, a prolific writer who served as a personal secretary of the 6th and 7th Chabad Rebbes.
The program uncovers fascinating stories, rare artifacts and precious documents from the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
Presented this week are 3 fascinating documents about the influence of the Rebbe over Benjamin Netanyahu, current Prime Minister of Israel and then its ambassador to the United Nations.
Document 1: A letter of the Rebbe to Netanyahu in Sivan 1985, in which the Rebbe titles him as once who “is active in the areas of defending Eretz Yisroel.” The Rebbe also acknowledges Netanyahu‘s decision to return to Israel, and enter politics. The Rebbe blesses him to “utilize his talents” in the above mentioned area.
Document 2: A letter that Netanyahu wrote to the Rebbe in the summer of 1985, saying that he is holding fast to the important words which the Rebbe imparted to him to stand strong among the nations.
Document 3: Enclosed with that letter, Netanyahu shares a transcript of one of the speeches he gave at the UN for the Rebbe to read.
In the speech, Netanyahu gives a historical overview of “Palestinian People and their legitimate rights” – in answer to an endless chorus of shrieking slogans and world voices against Israel in this world body, the UN.
Netanyahu gives a clear and accurate description of what has transpired since the state’s founding in 1948 and more recently, since the Six Day War of 1967.
He describes the changing narrative of the Arabs, fabricating one story after another – going from “territories” to “refugees” to “Israeli expansion” and finally to “self-determination” and “legitimate rights”
He said the consequences of Arab aggression are now presented as its cause.
