On Yom Kippur day, Jews around the world will be reading in the Torah from Parshas Vayikra, “The Almighty spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron’s two sons.”
It was that verse that was hit in the Torah scroll in the Chabad House in Mumbai during the 2008 terror attacks on India’s capital.
The damaged Torah scroll was discovered when officials examined the Chabad House following the massacre of the six Jews, including Shluchim Rabbi Gabi and Rivky Holtzberg, HY”D.
They saw bullet holes in the Aron Kodesh where the scroll was kept and then examined it to see if it had been damaged, IsraelNN.com reported at the time.
The verse refers to Nadav and Avihu, the sons of the High Priest Aaron who died when they performed an offering that was not commanded by the Almighty.
“I will be sanctified through those who are close to me,” it says in the same Torah reading, a statement that often is quoted following inexplicable deaths.
A COLlive reader suggested to mention the Mumbai Kedoshim during Yizkor on Yom Kippur:
