People come to the Banana Republic clothing retailer chain to get up-to-date, refined clothing for men and women, shoes and accessories.
But no one expects to leave the store with a dollar bill from the Rebbe.
A Lubavitcher Chossid from one of the large communities in Israel was recently visiting in New York where he prayed at 770 Eastern Parkway and the Rebbe’s Ohel gravesite.
He later went to Manhattan to shop for some clothing and was utterly surprised to receive a dollar bill with Hebrew writing with his change and receipt at a Banana store.
On top of the 1 dollar bill was written “Leah Friedman 13 Tammuz 5749.”
People who would get a dollar from the Rebbe to give to charity, give another instead and keep what was given to them in a safe place as a blessing. Many write their name and the date it was given.
The Lubavitch man told COLlive he is eager to find Ms. Friedman and have the precious dollar returned to its owner. He can be reached on his Israeli mobile: +972-52-3765265.
I casually followed the link and found a wonderful video clip of our family I didn’t know about!
i had a 5 dollar bill from the rebbe it got stolen!
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No one would intentionally spend a dollar from the Rebbe, especially not Mrs. Friedman. This is either a case where the dollar was stolen or lost and used by someone else, or there is a very slight chance she kept it with her at all times and inadvertently pulled out her segula bill and used it to pay for something instead of using a regular bill. No one in the US government would prosecute anyone for writing on that part of the currency in any case. If they prosecuted someone for writing on a Rebbe dollar after 18-20 years, it… Read more »
At some of the stupid comments about bananas and bandanas.
Statistically speaking, the likelihood of that happening is very, very small. We Jews believe in Hashgacha Pratis. Certainly, the person who found the bill did not share your sarcasm, thank-G-d.
It is a beautiful story of, at the very least, Hashavas Avaida. If we believe that even if leaf falling is part of G-d’s plan, is this not, too!
Wonderful story, thanks COL for posting it. Kudos to no. 3 for your “detective” work.
May the Rebbe’s brochos always shower down on us all.
It is illegal to deface legal tender in the United States. This law is rarely enforced, but if you are planning to keep a Rebbe dollar as a souvenir then it should not be put back into circulation.
maybe leah friedman asked hashem or the rebbe for a sign of some sort for help with something and this is the sign.
AMAZING WORK!!
wow thank you JEM for all your amazing work really really amazing
perhaps this is great advertising for JEM?
Thank you thank you for sending the link to jem-I didn’t know about it and now BH have two precious pictures!
awesome!
those people are crazy but this dollar clearly says series 1988 on so unless the tzfatim really have their act together to get old dollars from then, then it is an authentic dollar from the rebbe
that the guy wants to return it instead of keeping it!!!!
to # 12 I also had the same and until today we did’t find it was here in Brazil I had 120, from when I was leaving and learnig in beth Rivka I wish I find one day also wrotte in each one the date and name who know’s where they are????
to #6, you can put any date into the JEM search and you’ll be able to see everyone who received dollars that day. Leah Friedman received a dollar on the date written on the found dollar, making it likely that it was hers.
who is to say that this isnt a sign we should all vote republican???
WE MUST ALL START WEARING BANDANAS!!!!
During a home robbery, all my Rebbe Dollars were stolen. I am constantly checking my change (in dollars) to see if the robber circulated my money.
It’s so amazing #3!
i think ur a 100 percent right but not any ordenery banana it shuld be the best of the best (random)
In the picture from the JEM link, it says Mrs. Leah Friedman (Raskin). That’s Mrs. Friedman from Tzvas. I think the person who found the dollar should contact her. Last year I also received as change from a store in Crown Heights a dollar from the Rebbe that was given to someone. I mage phone calls until I traced the lady who it belonged to.
u mean we should all start wearing babana (i luv their stuff)
This is a sign that we all have to start eating Bananas
Did you find the picture because the dollar bill looked familiar? 😉
That is awesome! Look at no. 3’s link.
What are the chances? What a zechus!
B”H fyo fyo the date easily verifies when the dollar was from

Just so you should be aware, I recently saw someone writing an inscription on a dollar bill outside of 770. I know there is a new shtick about “getting dollars” in these days by some select individuals….I say this only so that others make sure whatever dollar they are claiming, they can verify it as authentic and not someone isn’t selling a dollar that was written on it yesterday…
Could it be Mrs Leah Friedman from Tsafas, who runs admin in Chitrik?? Just a thought . . .
