On Sunday, Rabbi Aryeh Ralbag, the Av Beis Din of Agudas Harabonim, presented a fascinating Shiur to the Yungeleit of Kolel L’horaah Ma’asis of Crown Heights, explaining the historical Eruv in the city of Amsterdam, based on the opinion of Rabbi Jacob Sasportas OBM (1610-1698) who relied on the bridges connecting the canals, and how the Eruv was rebuilt in recent history by Rabbi Ralbag, during his tenure as the Av Beis Din of Amsterdam.
Rabbi Ralbag explained the various opinions regarding how to make “doors” for a public domain, discussing the opinions of the Rishonim and Acharonim, and explaining his own idea for the Eruv, which was accepted by the leading Poskim of previous generations, and was later implemented in Amsterdam.
The Kolel, which is directed by Rabbi Yosef Greenwald – Menahel, Rabbi Sholom Shuchat – Rosh Kolel, and Rabbi Shraga Homnick – Sgan Rosh Kolel, completed this year in-depth study of the Halachos of Eruvin, and are currently completing Chazarah in preparation for a test on the Halachos.
