As Chasidim we know that when we meet someone, the first thing we do is find out if they are Jewish.
That’s what the students at HaMesivta did when they got a new math teacher.
You can imagine the joy the bochurim felt when they found out that he was Jewish, and that he had never put on Tefillin before.
They immediately got to work and arranged for a quick Bar Mitzvah before class started, they got some mezonos together and joined for some spirited dancing to celebrate the occasion.
Georgiy Vaysman was born in Odesa, Ukraine, and immigrated with his family to the US in 1992 when he was 4 years old.
He remembers his family gathering at his grandparents’ home for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, but back then in Ukraine, his grandparents weren’t able to openly practice Judaism.
Georgiy felt uplifted and inspired and is looking forward to learning more about Torah and yidishkeit, the students said.
