A number of Chabad centers around the world are offering Chinese cuisine to members of their communities in what has become a semi-tradition on the eve of December 24.
Nittel Nacht is how Xmas Eve is called in Jewish circles. Back in the day, in the Middle Ages, Jews were forbidden from appearing in public.
“The Previous Rebbe taught that it is customary not to study Torah on that night in order not to increase the Divine life energy present,” the Rebbe commented in a talk on Shabbos, Kislev 25, 5750.
“Each person in his own way must use nittel in a positive way,” the Rebbe said. “Rather than merely do nothing, he should perform acts connected with wisdom, or connected with charity and kindness, or connected with the proper functioning of his home.”
Based on the Rebbe’s comments in that sicha and actions over the years, COLlive compiled 6 things you can be doing (unless you want to go back and comment about “The Call of the Shofar”).
1. Play chess
![]()
One of the most common practices, dating back to the 5th Lubavitcher Rebbe Rashab. A picture of the Rebbe facing his father-in-law, the Frierdiker Rebbe with a chess board in front of them in claimed to have been taken on December 24.
SparkChess.com is a premier free single and multiplayer chess game that allows you to play against the computer or challenge your friends. “It sharpens one’s intellect,” the Rebbe once commented.
2. Watch My Encounter

Special for tonight, JEM is opening its Living Torah mobile app for the iPad, iPhone and Android devices for free viewing of their story segments.
Known as My Encounter, these short clips show people interacting with the Rebbe during different occasions, many of them heartwarming, inspirational and even humorous. There’s 400 of them.
The Rebbe actually recommended “picturing the holy image” of the Frierdiker Rebbe during this time. Download the app here.
3. Study at Khan Academy
The Rebbe emphasized to “add in matters of wisdom” with proper intentions on this night, so we refer you to the Khan Academy.
With the backing of Bill Gates and Google, Khan Academy offers free video lectures about math, art, computer programming, economics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, finance and history.
Here are 2 samples:
Empires before World War I
Renting vs. Buying a Home
4. Watch a documentary
In 5737, the Rebbe sat to watch video footage of chassidic undercover life in the Soviet Union filmed by Rabbi Berel Levy OBM. The Rebbe recommended that bochurim watch it as well.
We don’t have that video in our possession and a documentary has yet to be made about the heroic Chabad activism behind the Iron Curtain. So instead we offer you the 52 minute film “Inside the KGB: Terror of the Soviet Union.”
Alternatively, you can watch an episode of the National Geographic’s series “Judaism: Inside the Torah.” Titled “Kings of Israel – The Story of King David and the Jewish (Israelite) people,” it reviews the biblical and historical story of Dovid Hamelech based on archaeological findings.
5. Hear stories

When the famed Tanya commentator Rabbi Yosef Wineberg OBM had a radio broadcast scheduled for this evening, the Rebbe instructed that he share chassidic stories instead.
Judaism website Chabad.org has more than 800 Jewish stories from the sages, the chassidic masters, and contemporary Jewish storytellers that can sure keep your earbuds playing for hours.
Check it out at Chabad.org
6. Try sewing
The Rebbe also commented that “the story was once told of a yeshiva student who wore a jacket which was missing a button. When asked why he didn’t fix it, he replied that nittel was approaching and that he was putting off fixing it until then.
“The yeshiva student couldn’t conceive of time that would be spent without any positive input. Hence, knowing that he could not study on nittel, he planned to use the time for another constructive act.”

Do you have other suggestions? Tell us what you do on Nittel Nacht.
Some dumb archeologist with a shard of stone that has a half sentence, deciphering partial Hieroglyphics, and a messed up dating system, is going to tell me that the torah is wrong when it states that goliaths armor was bronze?!! Are you kidding me?
To #5: Most all businesses and restaurants are closed on the night of Dec. 24 and all day Dec. 25. Chinese restaurants are usually open because their owners and employees don’t observe Xmas. They belong to other Faiths. So the kosher Chinese restaurants thrive on those dates.
One of the Chabad centers here rents out a bowling alley/arcade place (owned by Yidden) every Nittel Nacht; they play the latest Jewish music, there’s one fee for almost all the attractions, and they sell food too–and last night, for the first time, it was Takeh Chinese! It’s great fun for families and a nice opportunity to socialize.
what do we do after nitel nacht?
Why write that the Rebbe encouraged something and then use it to promote something the Rebbe never encouraged? Use the time for chochma/seichel things yes, but to use the time for chochmos chitzonios – hametamos, that no. Also, there’s a big difference between a video on the lives of chassidim in Russia and between a documentary on the KGB. Chess and My Encounter stories are proper and helpful suggestions. Gates and KGB docs aren’t.
SUCH NON CHASIDISH!!!??? kgb feh!!!!
the moving library is a fantastic way to spend nittel nacht
We Khan do it every day.
Its the only thing that is open on that night and turns out all the jews are there at any location. unfortunately, they are not always the kosher locations that the jews are at.
#8 The Rebbe quoted the rebbe rashab about nittel from what at the time of Hayoim Yoim was not universally known. It wasnbt a chidush, that’s not the kevenoh of the Rebbe. What was the kevonoh of the Rebbe was to tell us that such is the impact of the klippah, so much so that the Reshab was upset at those who ignored those 8 hours and learned anyway
Listen to the latest The Fierec Battle by Rabbi Perl
Our whole family was glued all night!!!
Got together with a bunch of ladies and painted canvas…
the Iron Curtain, not the Iran Curtain. (See suggestion #4.)
see hayom yom – the rebbe Rashab was not happy with those who could not refrain for learning for the 8 hours till midnight. Steig after chatzos.
I had my friends over and we ate sushi and played brain games. What a blast!

Kahn Academy is an amazing resource! One day there will be a Kahn academy for Jewish subjects as well
Watch “Rivers and Tides” how Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy

#3 .. Am I missing something here… COL suggested something in the name if the Rebbe .. If you feel it is not true prove it .. If it is true that the Rebbe suggested it how dare you say it is NOT proper ????
cleaning!!
& it’s always good to learn something new, brush up on skills or catch up on current events.
I encourage everyone to read up about North Korea and the horrific labor camps going on there. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people are living in concentration camp conditions for decades, and the rest of the country is not doing much better. We want people to stand up against Jewish oppression, it’s important we do the same for others.
Thank you !
like we suddenly have NOTHING to do!!
It’s a fantastic place to learn a bunch of stuff!
STUDY!!!!! FOR A TEST TOM…..:)
Yud Shevat Scrapbooks.
Why? What did you think I was going to say?
“When the famed Tanya commentator Rabbi Yosef Wineberg OBM had a radio broadcast scheduled for this evening, the Rebbe instructed that he should share chassidic stories instead.”
Yes! Rabbi Braun said it’s permissible to do ‘7 Noahide Laws’ ‘mivztoyim.’
will we have these limitations very soon when moshiach comes?
its not the previous rebbe who taught not to learn on nittel nacht it written in hayom yom yud zayen teives that the rebbe rashab explained the reason why we dont learn on nittel nacht because we dont want to add chayus to klipa
Think of someone who needs a shidduch and try to help them!
To the person giving that lecture on rent verses buy. You must be either young or very naive. Property has made dips before and will, however it always goes up….up..up, and especially in sunny california…or in a good location. How much rent do you think the 3500. house will be in ten years.. I can guarantee that it will be close to double, if you live in a prime area. And in 10 years, all the money that your pay starts to go to principle and your interest is much less, while your rent is almost double….and although there could… Read more »
Why is nittel assoviated with eating chinese food?
I wonder if one can do ‘mivztoyim’ ‘7 Noahide Laws’ tonite? I’m trying to reach a ‘rav.’ I just came back from Kings Plaza and spoke to a number of non-Jews. I also gave them my promotional material, a ‘7 Noahide Laws’ website, my email and also: http://www.edenics.org for those who like language.
I can let you know.
Chasidishe stories are a very holy thing and should not be heard/told on nittel nacht.
bake a cake! read a book 🙂 make cookies or listen to music
