Twenty years ago today, Rabbi Dovid and Goldie Teichtel embarked on a journey of hope and vision as they arrived at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Urbana and Champaign, Illinois to establish a new Chabad Center. Over the years, their dedication and hard work have transformed the university and local community, creating a vibrant Jewish presence that continues to thrive.
Reflecting on their journey, Rabbi Teichtel expressed gratitude for the growth and progress achieved over the years. The University of Illinois is now home to a strong and active Jewish community, with thousands of students and alumni participating. This campus stands out with its University-affiliated Jewish housing and full kosher meal program, setting a standard for inclusive Jewish life.
The impact of their efforts extends beyond the campus, as the local community in East Central Illinois has grown into a beacon of light for the state. Looking back to their early days, when their aspirations were just a dream, the Teichtels are humbled by the blessings that have come their way.
In recognition of the significant contributions of Illini Chabad to both the campus and the community, the Champaign City Council made a landmark decision. Armory Street, situated at the heart of the campus between 2nd and 3rd Streets, was renamed Honorary Chabad Way. This renaming reflects the impact Chabad has had and symbolizes the pride and excitement that this street will bring to all who traverse it.
The significance of this change is profound. Every bus, car, and pedestrian using this central thoroughfare will now enter campus via Chabad Way, a testament to the Jewish pride and culture that Chabad has infused into the community. The honor bestowed upon Illini Chabad by this recognition is shared with gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead.
The process leading to this moment was marked by heartfelt testimonials from those who have been touched by Chabad’s presence. A young professional, representing their family, spoke about how they had encountered Illini Chabad through a newspaper article and felt compelled to engage. This initial connection led to a multi-generational involvement, from attending day camps to celebrating family milestones, exemplifying the meaningful impact Chabad has on individuals’ lives.
Gioconda Guerra Perez, Executive Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity for the university, highlighted the inclusivity and diversity that Chabad promotes. Mrs. Perez said, “The unanimous passing of the resolution to rename the street underscores the community’s shared recognition of Chabad’s positive influence. This renamed thoroughfare will be a conduit for all to experience the warmth and hospitality that Chabad embodies.”
Rabbi Teichtel points out that “the street was named way, and not street, because we wanted to reflect that this is the Derech, as a Kovod to the Rebbe, we are bringing this path to our corner here in Illini.”
Looking back at the past two decades, Rabbi and Goldie Teichtel marvel at the growth they have witnessed. Alumni who once crossed their path are now embracing Jewish traditions and values in their own families and communities. The fruits of their labor reflect not only their efforts but the enduring legacy of the Rebbe’s mission.
As Illini Chabad enters its third decade, the Teichtels remain committed to building upon their successes and making even greater impacts. The renaming of Chabad Way serves as a reminder of their journey’s significance and the lasting influence of Chabad’s mission. With the Rebbe’s blessing, they eagerly anticipate the opening of a new building in October, continuing to pave the Chabad Way for years to come.
