Two Merkos Shlichus bochurim in Cote S. Luc in Montreal put up mezuzahs in two resident’s apartments on Sunday. It was two stories of hasgachah protis.
On Friday, the Shluchim went on mivtzoim to an apartment building, which most of the doors have mezuzas. The doors without mezuzas are mostly non-Jews.
Last Friday, as the bochurim were done visiting one of the floors and about to move on to the next floor, they heard a familiar tune coming from one of the doors without a mezuza! Coming from the apartment was the sound of the Alter Rebbe’s Avinu Malkeinu niggun.
They walked over and knocked on the door. An older frum Israeli woman opened the door and they handed her a brochure. The bochurim asked her, “why don’t you have a mezuza on your door?”
“I didn’t know where to get one,” she replied.
So the bochurim asked her if she would like one, and she said yes. They told her they would bring one on Sunday.
A few floors up, the two bochurim met another Israeli woman and asked her how she is doing. She said that she’s having surgery next week to take out a growth in one of her lungs. One of the bochurim told her about the importance of checking her Mezuza. On her door there was a small Mezuza, but she had a different normal size Mezuza which wasn’t hanging which she gave to the bochurim to check.
On Sunday, the bochurim first went to place the Mezuza on the first woman’s door. She was very happy to have bochurim put up the Mezuza with a bracha.
Afterwards they went to the second lady’s doorway, and she had an interesting miracle story to tell.
Her Hebrew name is Ruchama, and she lived in northern Israel in 1979. One night at around 1 a.m. she heard an explosion outside. During that time she was used to hearing bombs and missiles from Lebanon so she wasn’t that worried.
Her husband took their two children, who were 2 and 4 years old at the time, and headed to the basement.
She suddenly heard the cocking of rifles close by, and was terrified to realize that terrorists actually came to her building where she lived.
Since she hadn’t gone downstairs with her husband, she went upstairs with her neighbor and the neighbor’s 8 month old baby to hide. She went and hid in a crawlspace in her neighbor’s apartment, but the baby was crying loudly so she had to silence the baby.
Suddenly the terrorist blew off the door to the apartment, he looked around and didn’t find anyone so he left.
Another one of her neighbors heard the sound of the terrorists and had a special gun used to kill big fish. When one of the terrorists came to his door, he looked through the peephole and saw who it was, opened his door and fired this gun at the Arab’s head and killed him.
Her husband and one of her daughters escaped, but one of the girls was still in the basement. She later said she saw a big man dressed in black clothing. She didn’t understand who it was, so she hid under a table and the terrorist walked right past her without realizing she was there.
She heard him ask in Hebrew if there’s anyone else there, and miraculously she didn’t make a single sound. She was under the table for a few hours until one of the soldiers found her there. Soon the IDF came and killed one arab and arrested the other.
A few years ago, the woman continued, when Israel released prisoners in exchange for Gilad Shalit, she recognized one of the prisoners who was one of the terrorists who had attacked her village.
The bochurim then replaced the old Mezuza with a kosher one, wished her a year of good health and a shana tova umituka.
