I always thought Shuls were created only after the BHMK destruction. Isn’t Tefillah in place of Korbanos, not at the same time?

Shuls existed

Throughout the period of the second bayis shuls were a constant and central part of Jewish life. Even on Har Habayis itself there was a shul. And the Shemoneh Esrei was instituted by the Knesses Hagedolah, so it was said throughout that period — including in the Beis Hamikdosh itself.

How do they know it was a Shule/ Jewish building?

“several menorahs, altars” — does NOT sound like a shul! Using an alter outside the Beis Hamikdos is a huge transgression!!! Lighting 7-branch menorahs is not part of a shul either.

(It’s possible it had originally been a shul but was later a church of some sort, r”l, where they used alters etc.)

Seven branched menorahs are common theme in many synagogues.
The word “altar” is a mistranslation as that’s what the term used foe a central part of orthodix churches. What they refer to is Aron Kodesh.
