The Spinka Rov of Yerushalayim, Rabbi Avrohom Yitzchok Kahane, was the guest of the Jewish community of Uzhgorod (Ungvár) in Ukraine led by Chabad Shliach, Rabbi Mendel Wilhelm.
The visit coincided with the yartzeit of Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried, one of the renowned halachic poskim of the 19th century and author of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, who is buried in Uzhgorod.
The Spinka Rov arrived on Wednesday with close family members and visited the local shul and mikvah. Some of them speculated how their grandparents may very well have davened in the very shul a few decades back.
Following Shachris, Rabbi Wilhelm explained the importance of learning “Hilchos Beis Habechiroh,” the laws of the Beis Hamikdash, mentioning how the Lubavitcher Rebbe encouraged its learning during the Three Weeks of mourning.
Over breakfast, Rabbi Wilhelm shared with his guests the tremendous power of hashgachah pratis (Divine Providence) that he has seen in all areas of his Shlichus and communal activities.
The Spinka Rov greeted community members as well as the Chabad bochurim Yosef Chaim Liberow and Moshe Morozow who recently arrived in Ukraine to assist Rabbi Wilhelm in his local activities and to visit Jews in nearby towns.
At the resting place of Rabbi Ganzfried, whose yartzeit is on the 28th of Tammuz, prayers, Tehillim and Kaddish was said by some of his descendants that were present.
Before departing, the Spinka Rov thanked Rabbi Wilhelm for his hospitality and praised Chabad activities worldwide and “particularly about the zechus of being involved in these activities and rekindling Jewish awareness and observance in communities that were once flourishing centers for Jewish life.”
