Shang Chai Kosher, the oldest Kosher Chinese restaurant in New York, is closing its doors on Jan. 1st, due to renovations.
“The space is being renovated and it’s unlikely we will be reopening the restaurant,” Shang Chai’s head waiter said. “A bank is likely going to take over the location,” she said.
Famous for their inexpensive Thursday night “all you can” buffet and all week long Sheva Brocha packages, Shang Chai has been a staple in the Brooklyn Jewish community for over thirty five years.
Menachem Fuchs went Thursday evening for one last buffet before the restaurant closes.
“The place was on wheels. People were hugging the waiters, saying goodbye, and taking photos with them. Think about the thousands of Sheva Brocha events the restaurant hosted over the years,” he exclaimed with emotion.
Eliezer Ben-Tzvi said that the first time he ate at Shang Chai was in the late 70s when he brought his wife to the restaurant on a date. And some thirty three years later, “we still come, but now, we bring our children and grandchildren with us.”
Leaning back in his chair, he smiled and said, “It’s been a great run. I wish they would have remained open for just one more generation.”
Its not the prices or quality of food that makes people sad to see it close. It’s the fact that they have been around for SO long that a lot of people have many memories of family simcha of their grandparents etc and so it has an emotional connection
This was the only restaurant that was child friendly. You can take your kids there without worrying about rice on the floor, or kids running around. It was a family restaurant and I have not been to a restaurant that has family friendly staff and family friendly prices. You were able to take a family of 4-8 people and spend anywhere from 40 bucks to under 100. So sad…
I was told yrs ago not to eat there.
NO WAY China glatt doesn’t know real chineese food.
There is no comparision between Shang Chai to China Glatt.
YOU GUYS ARE BEING STUPID!!! I LIKE CHINA GLATT, BUT I LIKE SHANG CHAI BETTER. WHO CARES IF IT IS EXPENSIVE????? THEY WORK HARD AND HAVE VERY GOOD FOOD!!! i just went there on December 13. ……… the very last time i will ever go there. 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 I will miss it, but soetimes you just have to move on in life. i guess i will have to go to china glatt now.(p.s. they have very good chicken soup and egg roles) IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT MY COMMENT WELL THEN GO RIGHT AHEAD…
but i cant! Emotion is not for me! Common! Move on in life! Life is not gonna change AT ALL! Not even a little bit! Its good to see that they are moving on in life we can learn a lesson in lid that some times you have to move.
