The National Weather Service has issued a snow squall warning for the New York City tri-state area until 5:30 p.m. EST Wednesday afternoon.
The warning covers portions of northeastern New Jersey, New York City, western Long Island, the lower Hudson Valley and southern Connecticut. Some highways impacted include interstates 280, 287 and 278.
Hazards: Extremely poor visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow with wind gusts up to 40 mph resulting in dangerous, life-threatening travel conditions.
Preparedness Actions:
– There is no safe place on a highway during a snow squall. Visibility and traction are immediately lost in whiteout conditions, making it difficult or impossible to slow down and avoid stopped vehicles.
– Delay travel or safely exit the highway before the snow squall arrives.
Nearly 16 million people are included in this snow squall warning. It is the first such warning issued for the New York City area this winter season. The first-ever snow squall warning for the Big Apple was issued Jan. 30, 2019.
