A new Torah is being written in honor and memory of R’ Shalom Gurewicz obm, resident of Chicago, IL, who passed away 10 Nissan, 5780 at the age of 56.
R’ Gurewicz dedicated his entire life to Torah, Mitzvos and to his family.
He was a man of purity and cared about every person he met, relating to them on their level, making them feel special.
Shalom grew up in Melbourne, Australia, where his grandfather R’ Nochum Zalman Gurewicz Z”L was amongst the few families sent by the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe to Australia to start a Jewish community.
R’ Shmuel Gurewicz Sheyichye, Shalom’s father ran the girl’s high school Beth Rivka for 40 years, giving a Jewish education to thousands of thousands of children. His Mother Chava Shetichye was a teacher in Beth Rivka and opened her home to students. Shalom along with his wife and 6 children lived in Chicago for many years, opening their home to many people from all Jewish backgrounds for Shabbos and for a place to go that feels like home.
People felt they can go to Shalom for a listening ear or solid advice and clarity. He did anything within his capacity to help someone regardless of who they were and where they came from. Shalom devoted many years of his life to the holy work of kashrus, ensuring that this holy Mitzvah be kept to the highest standards. Anyone who knew Shalom knows how humble a man he was.
Whatever he did was done quietly and with joy, especially for his family which he took much pride in. There are so many people who continue to have such fond feelings towards him, and we heard so many stories about him that we even were unaware of since his passing. His loving family decided that a Sefer Torah would be a beautiful way for people to connect to and remember him.
